The Clery Act
The Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act was enacted in 1990 in memory of Jeanne Clery, a college student who tragically lost her life due to a violent crime committed by another student. Jeanne’s parents believed that if she had been aware of the crime occurring on campus, she could have made more informed decisions to protect herself, possibly preventing the tragedy.
The law was later renamed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (20 U.S.C. § 1092(f)), commonly known as the Clery Act, to honor her legacy. Its mission remains clear:
To provide timely and transparent information about campus crime, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their personal safety and the safety of others.
Clery Act Compliance at LSUS
The Clery Act requires all federally funded colleges and universities to comply with over 115 safety and security-related policies and procedures. Compliance is overseen by the U.S. Department of Education, and institutions that fail to meet these requirements may face significant fines and penalties. Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) is committed to full compliance with the Clery Act and works diligently to keep its campus community informed and safe.
