First-Generation Student Success Programs

PROGRAMS & EVENTS

  • First Gen Bridge to Success (August)
    • Half-day (4-hr) workshop for incoming first gen students and parents/family/supporters
    • Brief college readiness program designed to empower first-generation incoming students and prepare them for the academic, social, and emotional challenges they may encounter during their transition to higher education.
    • This event aims to bridge the gap between high school and college for students who will be the first in their families to attend college.
  • Rising Scholars First Gen Success Program
    • One-year program for new first-year, first-gen students; by invitation only
    • Includes financial awards, mentor/coach, coaching sessions every two weeks, special events, dedicated incentives, and special recognitions
  • National First Gen College Celebration Day/Week
    • November 8th each year
    • Special events and programs to celebrate first gen students
  • First Gen Graduation Cords
    • Teal identity cords honoring any graduating first gen student
    • Provided at each commencement ceremony at no cost to students

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

  • First Gen Leaders
    • Student club supporting first gen students, led by students
    • Open to any student to join
  • Tri-Alpha Honor Society for First Generation College Students
    • Honor society recognizing academic achievements of first gen students
    • Open to undergraduate students with at least 30 hours and minimum GPA of 3.2
    • Open to graduate students with at least 9 hours and minimum graduate GPA of 3.5
    • Open to first gen faculty/staff currently employed at LSUS
    • Open to first gen alumni by special invitation
    • Invitation only with induction ceremony each semester (in person and virtual options)
