Bachelor of Science (B.S.)

In the bachelor degree program in computer science at Louisiana State University Shreveport, you'll become a technological advancement leader and be prepared for in-demand careers in both the private and public sectors.

Earn a computer science degree from Louisiana State University Shreveport and choose from four concentrations. There are about 500,000 jobs in America for computer professionals that are unfilled due to qualifications. LSU Shreveport’s computer science faculty are here to make sure students, like you, are equipped to fill those jobs.

Why LSUS’ computer science degree program?

LSUS’ computer science bachelor degree program is one of the leading specializations in the state, with concentrations as broad as the industry itself. As a computer science major at LSUS, you could learn in technology-enabled classrooms, fully equipped with interactive screens, smart whiteboards and AppleTVs. You also have the opportunity to work in labs dedicated to animation, bio-informatics, computer game development, network security and more.

Experiential learning to prepare for real-world careers

Computer science majors are encouraged to complete an internship during their time as a student. The department maintains connections to many area businesses. Students in the bachelor’s degree program have secured computer science internships and full-time positions as database engineers at international steel corporations, network security professionals, developers within the government, software engineers at Apple and more.

Computer science majors are involved in hands-on projects as early as their first year. You’ll get to use new technologies like virtual reality headsets and take courses such as artificial intelligence, robotics, bioinformatics, networks, cybersecurity, mobile development and data mining.

Student life

Among LSUS’ 70+ clubs and organizations are the Computer Science Club, the Computer Game Development Club and the Cybersecurity Club. From regional and national competitions to weekly lunches with area professionals, these organizations are great opportunities to build a résumé and make connections.

Set up for success

The mission of the department is to help students receive their computer science degree as leaders of technology and change. Representatives from Cisco, Benteler Steel, Kobus Technologies, APS, Seven Networks, Ingalls and other businesses take the time to network with computer science majors during the department’s monthly Lunch & Learn.

Financial Aid for Computer Science Majors

Over $12.4 million in scholarship money is given to LSUS students every year. Of that, the department awards a number of scholarships to computer science majors up to $2,000. Explore the types of financial aid you could qualify for.

Computer Science Concentrations

Software Development

Computer Science Concentration

The software development concentration is accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org. With a wealth of connections and hands-on experiences, this computer science concentration will prepare you to design, implement and develop computer software.

Information Systems

Computer Science Concentration

This business-oriented concentration prepares computer science majors for a wide-variety of jobs. Not only will you gain technological expertise, you’ll also be exposed to the foundation of business through management, marketing, accounting and finance courses.

Cyber Security & Networking

Computer Science Concentration

Cybersecurity is one of the leading industries of our time—Forbes ranks it best for salary, job satisfaction and career opportunities. LSUS was honored to receive a generous grant for installation of a Collaboratory and Cybersecurity Lab, providing computer science majors with a hands-on learning environment. Pairing with the criminal justice program at LSUS, this concentration will prepare you to work in network security across industries—including both government and private sector jobs.

Digital and Interactive Design

Computer Science Concentration

Working in conjunction with the Digital Media & Arts Department, the digital and interactive design concentration will prepare you for work on the technical side of animation and visual effects.

Program Outcomes and Objectives

Program Educational Objectives - Graduate & Undergraduate
ABET describes program objectives as: broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to attain within a few years after graduation. ABET further states that these objectives are "based on the needs of the program's constituencies." The Computer Science department revised our program outcomes through a meeting with our Computer Science Advisory Committee in 2018, from a 2019 survey, and the 2019-2020 ABET crtieria updates. These revised four objectives apply to all concentrations in the BS in Computer Science, including the ABET accredited Software Development concentration.

Objective 1: Our graduates remain current in their chosen careers through lifelong learning. Examples of activities/behaviors that satisfy this objective: Graduate School, Certifications, Seminars, Workshops, Continuing Education Courses, Research Activities.

Objective 2: Our graduates successfully use and apply new technologies.

Objective 3: Our graduates successfully advance in their careers through increasing levels of responsibility and technical complexity.

Objective 4: Our graduates are capable of communicating effectively with technical and non-technical groups/individuals.

Student Outcomes
ABET Student Outcomes describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. These relate to the knowledge, skills, and behaviors that students acquire as they progress through the program.

ABET Accredited BS in Computer Science (Software Development) has the following student outcomes:
  1. Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions.
  2. Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program's discipline.
  3. Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts.
  4. Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles.
  5. Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program's discipline.
All concentrations in the BS in Computer Science (including cyber security and networking, information systems, digital and interactive design) will also develop the following student outcome:
     6. Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solutions.
