Biography

Urska Cvek is Professor of Computer Science at LSUS, where she holds the Lisa Burke Bioinformatics Endowed Professorship. She received her Bachelor’s in Economics  degree from University of Ljubljana, Slovenia (1995). She discovered her passion for computing while pursuing her graduate Business Administration degree at University of Massachusetts Lowell where she was awarded her M.B.A. (1997) and Doctor of Science in Computer Science (2004) degrees. Prior to joining LSUS, she co-founded Anvil, Inc., a data visualization company, and worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Visualization and Perception Research and Center for Family, Work and Community at UMass Lowell.

Research Interests

Dr. Cvek loves to share her knowledge and skills with her students and cross-pollinates her teaching with her research work. She is a computer scientist with a focus on insightful and novel data presentation and her research work and publications include the design and application of data analytics and information visualization techniques to a variety of data sources, from biomedical and clinical to engineering. These techniques discover and identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in large volumes of data. She has a unique multidisciplinary background, expertise and insight that spans more than twenty years. She has been initiating, planning, developing, and executing research projects independently and with collaborators in multidisciplinary teams that have resulted in grant-funded proposals and publications by faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students in the Laboratory for Advanced Biomedical Informatics (LABi), which she co-founded and co-directs.
