Experiential learning to prepare for real-world careers 

Community health majors at LSUS are required to complete a practicum through which you’ll gain experience observing industry practices, assisting a supervisor and assessing procedures and clients. This opportunity will provide you with unparalleled experience entering a full-time position or graduate studies. Community health students have held practicing assignments with chiropractic offices, head and spinal injury prevention centers, Division I athletic programs, and many health-related non-profit organizations.

Explore the Community Health Bachelor’s Degree at LSUS

The community health program at LSUS will provide you with basic knowledge of health advocacy, program planning, health literacy, epidemiology, exercise science, environmental influences on health, and the aspects of aging. The bachelor’s degree program gives you the opportunity to engage in a physically active lifestyle both inside and outside the classroom.  

Hands-on experience 

As a community health major at LSUS, you’ll graduate with an abundance of connections and experiences. You’ll fulfill a required internship or practicum at a health- or exercise-related center. Community health majors have worked at the Shreveport MLK Health Center, the YMCA, the American Red Cross and more. 

Student life 

The Kinesiology, Health and Sport Science Club and the Public Health Student Association at LSUS are two of the 70+ student-run clubs on campus. From community projects to networking events, involvement in these organizations provide opportunities to strengthen your résumé and make connections.

Nonprofit Administration

Community Health Concentration

Nonprofit administration majors take courses from both the community health and sociology programs. The community health major will provide you with the necessary experience to manage nonprofit organizations.

Health Behavior

Community Health Concentration

As a community health major with a concentration in health behavior, your experiences and courses will focus on the results of decision making and practices based on natural human behavior. In this community health concentration, you’ll take courses on environmental health problem prevention, epidemic diseases, media literacy and consumer protection.

Exercise Science

The exercise science concentration is designed for community health majors desiring expertise in fitness and wellness. The curriculum for physical activity majors complies with the majority of graduate studies programs in public health and strength and conditioning. 

Pre-Physical Therapy

Community Health Concentration

A majority of the community health majors at LSUS are pursuing concentrations in Pre-Physical Therapy and Pre-Occupational Therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to work with professionals from diverse health care facilities in Shreveport on a regular basis. 

Health and Fitness Management

As a community health major with a concentration in health fitness management, you’ll take courses from both the community health and business departments.

The LSUS community health department is home to the USA Weightlifting High Performance and Development Center – the first and most successful in the country. As a community health major with a concentration in strength and conditioning, you’ll have the opportunity to use this center to your advantage for research and practicum experiences.
