Let's Taco ‘Bout Relationships

Student Activities Board facilitated an open conversation about navigating healthy relationships. The conversation was moderated by a counselor from the Counseling Services Office. The first 30 face-to-face attendees received free tacos.

Virtual Intimate Partner Violence Education Campaign

The University shared infographics via email and social media channels to educate students on intimate partner sexual violence and resources available.

Virtual Denim Day
April 29, 2020
Students virtually observed Denim Day by making a social statement with their fashion statement. Students showed support for sexual assault survivors by sharing photos of themselves wearing denim on the LSUS Counseling Services social media pages.

2018-19

Unmasking Domestic Violence Breakfast and Silent Auction
October 16, 2018
Project Celebration, Inc. hosted their second annual Unmasking Domestic Violence Breakfast and Silent Auction in the LSUS Ballroom.  LSUS co-sponsored the event.  The event raised awareness and financial support for domestic violence prevention, education, and support for survivors.  Ms. Bonnie Moore, Director of Community Development, served as the keynote speaker.

A visual display in the Student Success Center (first floor of the Noel Memorial Library) represented families and friends who have been affected by domestic violence.

Shine the Light on Sexual Assault Fun Run and 5K
April 12, 2019
Project Celebration, Inc. hosted their Shine the Light on Sexual Assault Fun Run and 5K on the LSUS campus. LSUS co-sponsored the event. The event raised awareness and financial support for sexual assault prevention and demonstrated support for survivors.

Wear Purple Day/Balloon Release
October 20, 2017
Students, faculty, and staff wore purple to show their support against domestic violence. A balloon release took place on-campus.

Outlier Presentation
October 30, 2017
Several local survivors, artists, government officials, business leaders, advocates, and other community members read stories of survival to raise awareness, dispel victim stigma, and foster restorative justice for sexual violence victims in our community. Students had the opportunity to participate by sharing their stories as well.

Dr. Justine Shuey, Sexologist
March 7, 2018
Board certified sexologist, Dr. Justine Shuey, discussed topics including sexuality, healthy relationships, and more.  Students had the opportunity to participate in an anonymous Q&A via text with Dr. Shuey.

College of Arts & Sciences Lecture Series: Uncomfortable Conversations 
March 9, 2018
Ms. Samantha Barbour, Assistant Professor of Digital Arts, shared her results of a study gauging people's reactions to discussing rape culture in popular media.  Professor Barbour highlighted the work and findings of the project, and speculated on ways in which the study might help people talk openly about uncomfortable situations in order to begin to impact negative aspects of culture today.

Self-Defense Training Classes
April 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2018
During the month of April, self-defense classes were offered to students and faculty/staff.  The classes covered basic hand self-defense tactics and real world situations/scenarios.

Paws for Celebration Pet Walk
October 8, 2016 
Students, faculty, and staff were invited to attend a pet walk held at Betty Virginia Park which raised awareness and funding for the area's local domestic violence advocacy organization (Project Celebration, Inc.). 

Domestic Violence Awareness Documentary
October 12, 2016 
Students, faculty, and staff attended a screening of "Telling Amy's Story" to observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Advocates were available after the documentary to speak with attendees.  Free popcorn and beverages were provided.   

Domestic Violence Shelter Drive

Students, faculty, and staff collected items for the local domestic violence shelter, operated by Project Celebration, Inc.

The University observed Denim Day, which is an international movement held to promote sexual assault awareness.  Students, faculty, and staff wore red shirts and jeans to show support for sexual assault survivors.

Self Defense Training
April 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2016
Students, faculty, and staff learned how to defend themselves in a physical confrontation.  The series included what to do if someone grabs, pushes, punches, or pins you to the ground, and how to de-escalate a verbal conflict that might arise.  

Sexual Assault Awareness Display
April 8-30, 2016
Student Development and the Student Activities Board teamed up to share a visual display representing the number of students who have been statistically affected by sexual violence. The installation was on the UC mall during April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
