Shreveport, LA – LSUS Continuing Education hosts the seventh annual Mental Health Awareness and Substance Abuse Conference on December 3, 2021. This hybrid event, consisting of in-person and Zoom attendance options, will enable participants to earn two clinical and four general Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

“LSUS Continuing Education has a long history of supporting our Mental Healthcare workers in public and private industry by providing yearly conferences on Mental Health, Substance Abuse, Bullying, and Suicide Prevention,” said Leigh Anne Chambers, Executive Director of Events and Community Initiatives. “This continual training for the professionals in our community is integral to serving the needs of our residents.”

Throughout the conference, participants will engage in sessions on holistic reorientation, addictive disorder relapse prevention, depression, and mental health services in schools. This information is vital for anyone servicing mental health or substance abuse prevention. According to the 2021 State of Mental Health in America report, mental health challenges among adults, youth, and children have increased over the past year.

“There is a troubling trend in higher levels of anxiety, depression, as well as social isolation due to the pandemic,” LSUS Associate Dean of the College of Education and Human Development Dr. Katherine Wickstrom said. “This conference will help provide critical skills to practitioners as they advocate and assist their clients with prevention and intervention services.”

Keynote speaker Erin Scherder, EdS, MA, also welcomes the opportunity to discuss the importance of mental health. “LSUS is cultivating mutual consultation and collaboration opportunities at the upcoming Mental Health Awareness and Substance Abuse Prevention Conference,” said Scherder. “This event and the awareness it is creating through facilitated co-learning is more critical now than ever before.”
