Philosophy, Objectives and General Information

Philosophy
The College of Sciences fosters in students an awareness of the laws of nature that have allowed humanity to achieve its high level of societal development.

Objectives
The College of Sciences provides both the environment and the resources through which students may become scientifically and mathematically literate.

Each student should develop the critical analysis skills necessary to address scientific issues in the objective and humane manner required by a democratic society. To this end the College of Sciences offers courses that prepare students to analyze empirical phenomena, to synthesize models, and to develop theories from hypotheses and experiments.

General Information

The College offers Bachelor of Science degrees through each of its four departments—biological sciences, chemistry and physics, computer science, and mathematics. A master’s degree in computer systems technology is offered through the Computer Science Department. A Master of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Cellular Biology and Anatomy; Microbiology and Immunology; Pharmacology and Therapeutics; Physiology and Biophysics is available through a cooperative program with the Louisiana Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. Also, a Master of Science in Environmental Science is available through a cooperative program with LSU Baton Rouge. Preparation for medical or dental study is available through either the Department of Biological Sciences or the Department of Chemistry/Physics, as are transfer programs in the allied health areas.

Admission
A student may be admitted to the College of Sciences as an entering freshman, by transfer from another college within the University, or by transfer from another institution. Transfer credits apply for degree credit only to the extent to which they represent courses acceptable in a curriculum of the College.

The number of hours of Military Science permitted for degree credit in each curriculum is determined by the department offering the program.

Requirements for the Baccalaureate
Degree
The Bachelor of Science degree is granted by the College of Sciences to the student upon satisfactory completion of all general degree requirements and all requirements of one of the four-year programs offered in the College.

Pass/No Credit Option
The student in the College of Sciences who has achieved junior standing and has an overall average of 2.0 on all work taken at LSUS may choose to take some courses on a pass/no credit basis, with work of C quality or better required for a grade of P. The number of credits that may be earned in this manner is determined by the department offering the major in which the student is enrolled but cannot exceed 12 hours. This total does not include credits earned by Advanced Standing Examinations or in courses graded on a pass/no credit basis only. All courses so taken must be chosen from electives within the degree program with the consent of the student’s adviser. Credits earned on a pass/no credit basis will be disregarded in determining grade point average.

Students who wish to schedule a course on the pass/no credit basis must file an application form in the dean’s office by the final date for adding courses for credit of the term in which the course is taken. Once enrolled in a course on the pass/no credit basis, students may not change to another grading system. Detailed information may be obtained from the student’s adviser

Curricula
Pre-Medical Careers Preparation Program
Allied Health Sciences Preparatory Programs

Entrance into the LSU School of Allied Health Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy programs at both the New Orleans and Shreveport campuses require an undergraduate degree before entering the Master of Physical Therapy program offered through the School of Allied Health Professions at LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport and at LSU in New Orleans. The baccalaureate degree can be in any major, but because of the science requirements for entrance into the Physical Therapy program, students usually major in biochemistry, biological sciences, chemistry, or physics. Those students planning to apply to either the Occupational Therapy or the Physical Therapy program should contact the Allied Health Sciences advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences.

Other Biomedical Preparatory Programs

Programs designed to prepare the student for admission to continue in a four-year curriculum at another university are outlined below. These outlines are intended only as guides. The general catalog of the university where a student plans to complete the degree is used to plan the two-year program at LSUS.

Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental

Students who plan to pursue medicine or dentistry as a profession should select a degree program that will adequately prepare them for entry into a professional school yet provide ample opportunity to pursue additional interests in varied academic disciplines. Most professional schools stress a four-year degree program as the best possible preparation. Students may select any major; however, they and their adviser must be sure that the major program selected includes those courses required by the medical or dental school and offers sufficient free electives to include 40 to 50 hours of science.

Students interested in attending medical or dental school usually major in biochemistry, biological sciences, or chemistry. Please see the Pre-medical/Pre-dental advisor in the Department of Biological Sciences for assistance in selecting the necessary course work, taking the MCAT or DCAT, or filing an application for admission to the medical or dental school.

Other Science Preparatory Programs

The two-year curricula in these preparatory programs are based on corresponding four-year curricula. The general catalog of LSU Baton Rouge should be consulted for specific courses to be scheduled.

Engineering Cooperative Programs

Graduate Programs

Master of Science in Systems Technology

The Masters Degree in Systems Technology (MSST) is an inter-disciplinary program with components from the areas of computer science and management. It is offered principally as an evening program by the Computer Science Department within the College of Sciences.
As computer technology intersects every facet of our economic and social endeavors, there is a growing need in many organizations for individuals who are prepared to develop and direct technology-based systems. The MSST program is a “professional” degree program that develops the skills needed to effectively deal with complex, technology-based systems.
This is a non-thesis degree requiring the successful completion of 30 graduate term hours (a five-course core and five elective courses) and a comprehensive written exam.

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences

(Cooperative with LSU-Baton Rouge)
The College of Sciences at LSUS offers a cooperative graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Environmental Sciences from LSU in Baton Rouge. Students in the program take courses at LSUS including some courses that are delivered from LSU-BR via compressed video.

Master of Science

(Cooperative with Louisiana Health Sciences Center-Shreveport)
Students may earn a degree emphasizing biochemistry and molecular biology, cellular biology and anatomy, microbiology and immunology, pharmacology and therapeutics, and molecular and cellular physiology awarded by Louisiana Health Sciences Center-Shreveport.

For all policies and regulations pertaining to these graduate programs see “Graduate Programs” in this catalog.
