Walter B. Jacobs Memorial Nature Park to host Annual "Bugs, Bats, & Bones" Event

September 11, 2019

SHREVEPORT, LA-Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation Department will host the annual Bugs, Bats, & Bones event at Walter B Jacobs Memorial Nature Park on Saturday, October 26th from 5:00pm-9:00pm.  Visitors are invited to enjoy a wide variety of educational exhibits, presentations, games, hikes, and other activities at this free event.

At the park’s visitor center you can meet a live Turkey Vulture and learn about its role as nature’s garbage collector or step into the Snake Pit exhibit to meet some slithery creatures face to face. Join Dr. Beverly Burdon of LSUS for a nocturnal insect hunt and see what six-legged beasts are lurking in the forest. Then find your way into the Spider’s Web exhibit to discover what incredible creatures spiders really are.

Still feeling brave? Leave your flashlight behind and join us on a night hike! A naturalist will lead you into the forest for some interesting activities to help you explore how your senses work without light.

Have you worked up an appetite yet? Head to Café Insecta where you can eat (yes, really eat) some delicious foods prepared with insects. Try the Red Beans & Yikes, made with real waxworms or a chocolate-covered cricket!

Younger visitors can participate in Shreve Memorial Library’s storytime or join in at the arts & crafts area for make-and-take creepy creature creations. All ages can take part in a round of Bug Bingo or test your nature knowledge in the CSI game to win prizes.

Hot Dawg Hut, Uneeda Taco, and Candy Galore will be on site selling refreshments.

Shuttle service will be provided from Richard Fleming Park 7919 W Lakeshore Dr, Shreveport, LA 71107 to the nature park.

Admission and all activities are free.

The event address is 8012 Blanchard Furrh Road, Shreveport 71107.
