August 08, 2019

SHREVEPORT, LA- At the VIP Kickoff Event for the Red River Balloon Rally, two LSUS students received $1,000 scholarships. Brenda Acuna Sandoval and Pearl Merry are the 2019 recipients of the Bill Harwell Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was created in memory of Bill Harwell, an avid balloonist.

Acuna Sandoval plans to complete her Bachelor of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She then plans to attend dental school where she hopes to eventually complete a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, with a specialization in orthodontics. Her goal is to one day open her own practice to serve the Shreveport-Bossier City community.

"To receive this scholarship is a great honor and privilege. It really means so much to me that there are donors that want to help students continue and complete their education," Acuna Sandoval said. "It is very rewarding to have someone who doesn't know you personally make the decision to invest in your future. This scholarship is going to help me graduate. This is my last year as an undergraduate and I could not be more excited to have been awarded this scholarship to help me financially."

Merry has plans to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a minor in business. She aspires to graduate with honors as well as finishing a semester early. After graduation, she intends to go to medical school where she plans to become a doctor specializing in neurology, pediatrics, or oncology. She also wishes to go on medical mission trips to provide healthcare to those in need. She says this scholarship will help her college journey go smoother while helping pay for tuition and books.

"Receiving this scholarship for the second time is an honor. It motivates me to work harder and reminds me to do my best in school. It feels great to know that there are people who believe in me as I continue my college journey," Merry said. "I am truly blessed to have been selected for a second time because most students cannot say that they were selected for a second year in a row for an amazing scholarship. I will continue to strive for excellence and not let LSUS or the donor of this scholarship down. Thank you so much!"

Both recipients are active in their communities and members of various clubs and organizations on the LSUS campus. These LSUS pilots truly honor the memory of Mr. Harwell, and the legacy he left behind.
