TeachLSUS Offers Pathway to a Fast-Track Teaching Certification

October 10, 2019

SHREVEPORT, LA- TeachLSUS, a CAEP Accredited program, offers a fast-track to a teaching certification to those who have at least a bachelor's degree in a field other than education and wish to become an educator.

The program offers pathways in either elementary or secondary education, each totaling 30-33 credit hours. In order to give those with full-time careers more flexibility, classes meet only once a week, and not before 4 p.m.

Individuals accepted into the program may be eligible to work on a yearly temporary license after completing two courses within the TeachLSUS program. It can be renewed for up to three years as long as a certain coursework loads are maintained.

"It gives an individual who already has a degree, but gets into an alternative certification program a perk of being able to be a teacher full-time and receiving first year's salary, benefits and everything, but also gaining experience," Dr. Tracey Burrell, Director of Alternate Certification and Field Experiences, said. "If this is something they are really interested in then that hands-on experience is invaluable for them, immediately implementing some of the things they are learning."

The process of applying to the program starts with the online undergraduate application. Before being accepted into the program, a resume, philosophy of education statement, and a passing score on the Praxis I and Praxis II exams are required. LSUS has a Praxis lab on campus that provides study guide materials, flash cards, practice booklets, and computers with practice tests linked to the desktop. An individual may be exempt from Praxis I if they scored a composite score of 22 or higher on the ACT, or possess a Master's degree. Once all of this is completed, they will be given an interview slot. The interview will require a seven minute teaching demonstration created by the applicant.

"We ask them to think about how to engage students and demonstrate that they know their content. Those are the two things we look for on interview day. Then we have a personal interview with the selection committee," Dr. Burrell said.

TeachLSUS also offers TeachLSUS Command which is a program tailored for military members and their spouses. It is a secondary education alternative certification that is solely online for those who do not live in the area. If they are thinking about retirement or a change of course, the program offers them a fast-track online source to obtain a teaching position.

"The alternate certification student has a set of experiences that are valuable and can really translate in the classroom as real-world experiences. They can share those things and relate to the students," Dr. Burrell said. "I was an alternative certification student and remember being able to bring my experiences to high school students, and it seemed very beneficial."
