LSUS Researchers Featured at Local Research and Industry Day

February 09, 2019

SHREVEPORT, LA- Several members of the School of Mathematics and Sciences represented LSUS at the Research and Industry Day held late last fall at the Louisiana Tech Shreveport Center. The annual event, held on October 26th, was co-organized with LSU Center for Cardiovascular Disease and Sciences, LSU Center for Brain Health (both LSU Health Shreveport) and LA Tech Center for Biomedical Engineering and Rehabilitation Science.

Phillip Kilgore, Research Scientist in the Laboratory for Advanced Biomedical Informatics (LABi) at LSUS gave an oral presentation on Detecting Associations and Causation in Urine Drug Screening Data, which is a novel technique for sequential rule mining that attempts to determine association and highlight instances where rules may represent causation. This work is a result of a collaborative project among Phillip Kilgore, Dr. Marjan Trutschl, Dr. Urska Cvek (both LSUS) with Dr. Nadejda Korneeva and Dr. Thomas C. Arnold (both Dept. of Emergency Medicine, LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport).

Several posters were presented by a group of LSUS researchers, including:

Bioinformatics Analyses Identified Phase-Specific Heart Biomarkers and Blood Surrogate Markers for a Mouse Model of Viral Myocarditis, which was presented by Dr. Urska Cvek (LABi and Dept. of Computer Science), and is a multidisciplinary project in collaboration with Kindai University Faculty of Medicine, Osaka, Japan.

Natural Flavonoids and Their Inherent Anti-Tumorigenic Properties in Breast Cancer Cells was presented by Dr. Alena Smith, Dept. of Chemistry, and is a collaborative project with Dr. Elahe Mahdavian (Dept. of Biological Sciences) and Dr. Brian Salvatore (Dept. of Chemistry).

Analysis of the Physiological Properties of Fusarochromanone was presented by Christopher Stratton, a graduate student in the Master’s in Biological Sciences Program. This is a collaborative project with Dr. Alena Smith and Dr. Elahe Mahdavian.

These projects showcase the unique capabilities an advantages of the cross-institutional and multi-disciplinary teams of scientists at LSUS.
