LSUS Represented at 2016 USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships

March 22, 2016

LSU Shreveport is proud to announce that Josh Pineda, freshman, computer science major from Vineland, New Jersey, won the 2016 USA Weightlifting National Junior Championships, which took place February 18-21. Pineda won in the 56 kg. (123 lb.) category that was held in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and featured the top weightlifting athletes in the nation aged 20 and under. The event boasted of more than 200 athletes competing against each other for national titles and international team positions.

Pineda is excited to be awarded three gold medals by winning the snatch competition with a lift of 84 kg. (185 lb.), the clean and jerk competition with a lift of 110 kg. (242 lb.), and the combined total, finishing ahead of 23 other competitors in his category.

The snatch is the first of two lifts that is followed by the clean and jerk. The first lift requires the weightlifter to bring the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion. This is then followed by the clean and jerk where the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to the shoulders and then raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head.

Nine other LSUS students have been National Junior Champions including Aaron Adams, a 2011 graduate of LSUS, also from Vineland, and two-time Olympian and Pan American Games Champion Kendrick Farris.
