LSUS Debate Wins First Tournament in Spite of Imelda

September 23, 2019

(Baytown, TX) The LSU Shreveport Debate team has returned home victorious from the first tournament of the year hosted by Lee College in Baytown, Texas. Last week's tropical storm Imelda caused flooding and hazards that closed down I-10 on each side of Baytown forcing teams to take detours and back roads to get to Lee College. LSUS' perseverance and determination to compete paid off as it advanced 80% of its entries into the elimination rounds winning two divisions of the debate tournament.

Entering his first tournament of debate ever, MLA graduate student Steve Harkness joined teammate Tommy James, a graduating senior in Criminal Justice, in making it to the final round of the Professional Division and walked away as co-champions of the tournament. Victoria Silvio, a junior Business Administration major, won her first title as the champion of the Junior Varsity division.

Overall, the team took first place in sweepstakes for the tournament and individuals competitors from LSUS won six separate speaking awards. LSUS Assistant Director of Debate AJ Edwards stated, "I am so proud of our team. There was great competition out there and they did their jobs".

Next up for LSUS will be the Louisiana Tech University tournament scheduled for October 4-6th. For more information about the LSU Shreveport Debate Team, please contact the director of debate.
