NACOGDOCHES, TX- The LSUS Debate Team had a huge win at Stephen F. Austin State University this past weekend. The team continued its winning streak by taking the Overall Sweepstakes title, but did so by winning every division in the tournament for the first time in LSUS history.

LSUS's first title came in the team division. Both of its teams struggled in the preliminaries, and LSUS's team of Jerry McCauley and Dominic Mercer barely made it in as the last to qualify for the elimination rounds. They quickly took advantage by defeating the first seed on their way to winning the division. On Saturday, though the team entered the individual portion of the tournament and against some really tough competition, LSUS won more than 64% of its preliminary debates and advanced 9 to the elimination rounds. In 3 of the 4 divisions, LSUS had the top seed and did not look back. Overall, the team lost only 1 elimination round to opponents.

Megan Arbuckle, also top speaker in the novice division, reached the finals and won a tough 2-1 decision. In the junior varsity division, Ethan Arbuckle and Matthew Gedeon were the 1st and 2nd seeds going into the elimination rounds. Each won hard fought rounds and both reached the finals, making them co-champions in the division. The same thing happened in the varsity division. Fresh off their team division win, Dominic Mercer and Jerry McCauley both reached the final round, making them co-champions. Finally, Austin Lemoine reached the finals in the professional division and defeated the top seed for the title.

Trey Gibson, Director of Debate, stated, "In my 20-plus years of coaching debate, I've never had a team win every division like this and against such good competition. I am so proud of how hard this team has worked, but they still have a ways to go to reach their real potential".

Next up for the Pilots is a competition at East Texas Baptist University in November.
