LSUS Debate Captures 4 Southern Regional Titles and 8 Louisiana Titles

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 

(RUSTON, LA)  The LSU Shreveport Debate Team competed in the annual Southern Forensics Championship Tournament that brought 27 colleges and universities together representing 7 states. By the end of the final round of debate, the team finished as the top debate team, winning 4 SFC titles and 7 Louisiana titles. Points earned in the tournament by the team also extends their lead in the season rankings for the International Public Debate Association.

The team competed in nearly 160 rounds of debate over the 3 day weekend, winning over 56%, advancing 11 LSUS students into the elimination rounds, and earning an additional 4 speaking awards.

The Southern Forensic Championships is also a tournament that recognizes the top competitors and teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. 

Tyson Lee, a sophomore Social Science major, earned a 1st place speaker award in the novice division making him the SFC and Louisiana Champion for the tournament. He also went on to place 2nd in the novice division. 

Mary Catherine Procell, a junior Bio-molecular major, won the junior varsity division making her the SFC and Louisiana Champion in the event. She also earned a 3rd place speaking award in the event that gave her another Louisiana Champion award as the highest ranking speaker from Louisiana. 

James Bohn, a senior Psychology major, was the top speaker in the varsity division, making him both the SFC and Louisiana Champion. He and his partner, Austin Lemoine, a junior Education major, made it to the quarterfinals in the team division and were the top Louisiana team left in the tournament making them Louisiana Champions for the division. 

Overall, the team placed 1st in debate, winning both the SFC and Louisiana Champion titles. LSUS earned enough points to place 2nd in the overall sweepstakes category of the tournament making them also the top Louisiana team in the tournament.

Next up for the Pilot squad will be competition across the Red River as the team travels to BPCC on February 15-17th.
