LSUS Debate at Top of Standings in National Rankings List

December 04, 2018

Shreveport, LA- The International Public Debate Association National Rankings list is out as the first half of the competitive season comes to an end, and LSU Shreveport has earned the top spot. LSUS ranks 1st overall out of 82 programs that have competed in tournaments during the fall semester. Union University, from Jackson Tennessee, currently ranks 2nd, and Drury University, from Springfield Missouri, is in 3rd place.

Individually, LSUS team members rank very highly. In the Team Division, LSUS’s Jerry McCauley and Dom Mercer currently hold the number 1 spot with a significant lead over their closest competitors. LSUS’s Matthew Gedeon leads the Junior Varsity Division. However, in each case LSUS is counting one more tournament than their closest opponent, so competition is tight.

Overall, LSUS’s success is spread out across all divisions of debate. In addition to the LSUS debaters who are leading divisions, Pilots are currently holding on to 11 top 5 placings in various national ranking categories.

The team will pick up where they left off in the spring, with the annual Southern Forensic Championship tournament hosted by Louisiana Tech at the end of January. The season will end at LSUS, where the Pilots will play host to the International Public Debate Association Tournament Championships in April.
