Kites Will Fill the Sky During the American Kitefliers Association Competition in Shreveport/Bossier

SHREVEPORT, LA-The American Kitefliers Association will hold its 41st Annual Competition and Convention in Shreveport-Bossier, Oct. 16-20.  This is the first time the organization will hold its annual event in Louisiana.


AKA membership numbers are in the thousands, with members hailing from 25 different countries. According to the AKA website,, this convention is “one of the largest kite gatherings in the world.” More than 200 contestants took part in the 2017 convention, and 175 kitefliers are expected to make the trip to Shreveport-Bossier. The estimated economic impact for the community is $197,500.


“We are thrilled to be hosting approximately 175 AKA members in Shreveport-Bossier,” said Kevin Flowers, convention sales manager at the Shreveport-Bossier Convention and Tourist Bureau. Flowers secured the bid to host the convention in Oct. 2017.


Locals will have the opportunity to see incredible kite flying during free demonstrations and educational presentations each day. The public is also invited to spectate during outdoor and indoor kite-flying competitions taking place at LSUS and Shreveport Convention Center. These competitions will determine the reigning national champion for kite makers and stunt kite pilots.


The community will have the opportunity to welcome the American Kitefliers Association to Shreveport-Bossier during their annual Banner Parade of Color at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Louisiana Boardwalk Outlets.


Each day from Tuesday, Oct. 16 to Saturday, Oct. 20, different kites will be spotlighted during flying demonstrations from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the LSUS soccer fields. The public is invited to have lunch on the lawn while enjoying kite exhibitions. Spectators are encouraged to bring their lunch and picnic blankets or enjoy food from a local food truck each day. A field will also be open to the public to fly their own kites. Admission is free.


On Saturday, Oct. 20, the American Kitefliers Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LSUS soccer fields, sponsored by Cumulus Media. This free festival will accompany the final day of the kite flying exhibitions and Pioneer Day at LSUS’s Pioneer Heritage Center. Festivities will include the “Cumulus Media F.R.E.S.H. Zone” featuring local non-profit booths promoting family, recreation, education, safety, and health. DJs and personalities from the Cumulus Media cluster will also be in attendance.

Pioneer Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Pioneer Heritage Center at LSUS. Attendees can learn about the early pioneers of Shreveport-Bossier and explore a plantation home, blacksmith shop and medical office dated from 1830 to 1930. Admission is $2.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, the public is invited to watch the Indoor and Zero Wind Kite Flying Competition at Shreveport Convention Center from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and close at 7 p.m. No entry will be allowed afterward to allow for optimal zero wind conditions. Admission is free.
