International students increase in numbers at LSUS

November 16, 2017

The growth in the amount of international students at LSUS has seen a rise. LSUS is delighted to have 63 international students on campus compared to 25 last year. These students are from 33 countries ranging from Australia to Zimbabwe. Of these students, many are from the United Kingdom (6) and Canada (5).

“I’m very excited that we have a variety of people from all over, and we’re hoping that we will have more students next year,” said Dr. Sanjay Menon, dean of graduate studies. Many of the new international students can be attributed to soccer returning to the LSUS campus this Fall.

To prepare international students, there are two ways that they are assisted. Before starting school, students are assisted with their application process, document evaluation, and financial statements. “You want students to feel that there are people ready to serve and help,” said Menon. In addition to this, students participate in an orientation, which introduces them to the campus and administration. Peter Situmeang, director of international student services, seeks ways to keep international students involved. One of the activities hosted for international students is the cook-off that took place at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry on campus. “There was different types of food from different countries. Everyone who came to that event truly enjoyed it,” said Situmeang.

As a former international student, Situmeang is able to connect with students to help them have the best experience possible. “It’s always exciting to meet new people from new countries and get to know them better,” said Situmeang. LSUS looks forward to seeing continuous growth in international students on campus.
