SHREVEPORT, LA--LSU Shreveport will hold its Spring Commencement exercises at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 13 at CenturyLink Center in Bossier City, La.  Some 570 students are candidates for degrees.

Craig C. Spohn, executive director of the Cyber Innovation Center, will deliver the commencement address. He earned a bachelor of science degree from LSUS in 1987 and was among the 2008 recipients of the LSUS Alumni Association Circle of Excellence Award. The CIC he directs is a public/private initiative with a mission to create a knowledge-based workforce and diversify the region's economic base. The CIC promotes research, education and innovation and fosters collaborative and strategic alliances between government, industry and academia.

Before serving at CIC, Spohn was with Science Applications International Corp. where he served as vice president for Middle East business and coordinated SAIC's Saudi Arabian business as general manager of the Saudi Joint Venture.

Valencia Sarpy Jones, a 4th Congressional District representative on the LSU Board of Supervisors, will confer degrees during the LSUS commencement. She was appointed to the board by Gov. John Bel Edwards in 2016. Rabbi Jana De Benedetti will deliver the invocation and benediction.

Special Reception for Online Graduate Students

Many students in the online graduate programs will travel long distances for commencement. Last fall, a student from Ghana made the trip. Many will visit the campus for the first time.

In addition to graduation at CenturyLink, their day will also include special programs held on campus, offering opportunities for students to meet their professors, administrators and classmates in person. The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with top MBA students being inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma and Sigma Iota Epsilon, academic honor organizations, in the University Center. That is followed from 10 a.m. to noon by a reception, photo sessions and a Cajun-style brunch for online grad students and their families, sponsored by the LSUS Foundation.

Chancellor Larry Clark, Provost Nancy Jordan and faculty members will be on hand to meet graduating students in the Master of Business Administration, the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, Master of Education Leadership, Master of Nonprofit Leadership, and the Master of Health Administration.

Following the reception, participants will proceed to the CenturyLink Center for commencement ceremonies that begin at 2 p.m.
