An All-Scott Joplin Concert

January 30, 2018

University Center Theater, Louisiana State University Shreveport
7:00-8:30 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2018

A native Texan, Dowling began his piano studies at age five and debuted with the Fort Worth Chamber Symphony at age eighteen. He holds advanced degrees in music from Yale and the University of Texas, including a doctorate.

Hailed by The New York Times as "an especially impressive fine pianist," RICHARD DOWLING appears regularly across America as a solo and collaborative pianist. He has concertized in the Far East, South America, Australia, Africa, and Europe, and has recorded over a dozen CDs of classical, chamber, rag-time, jazz, and popular music. Dowling is also a Piatigorsky Foundation Artist and has performed more than 1,200 recitals across 23 states.

On April 1, 2017, Dowling performed the complete piano works of Scott Joplin, the great American rag-time composer, in two consecutive recitals at Carnegie Hall, exactly 100 years to the day Joplin died in New York. Dowling is the first pianist in history to perform the Joplin cycle in public. Rivermont Records released his 3-CD set, The Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin (all 54 rags, waltzes, marches, and cakewalks), which was recently nominated for a Grammy Award.

The concert is sponsored by the LSUS Department of Arts and Media and financially supported by The James S. Noel Foundation, Inc., Greater Shreveport Music Teachers Association, and private donors. The concert is free and open to the public.
