LSUS faculty recognized for outstanding community service

Dr. Carlos G. Spaht II is the recipient of The Jefferson Award 1998, locally sponsored by Bank One and KTBS. The Jefferson Award sponsors select five nominees from the ArkLaTex every year to be recognized for their achievements and highest ideals in the field of public service. The Jefferson Award National Board of Selectors chose Dr. Spaht to attend the National Celebration which will be held in Washington, DC, June 17-19. From all of the local Jefferson Awards recipients who attend the national ceremony, five are selected to be the national winners and will receive the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Local Communities.

The Jefferson Awards is a program of the American Institute for Public Service. The Institute was founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert Taft Jr., and Sam Beard to establish a nationally recognized award for outstanding community service.

Dr. Spaht, chair of the Mathematics Department, also was named the Louisiana Professor of the Year in 1997 by the Carnegie Foundation and the Council for Advancement of and Support of Education (CASE). Louisiana Governor Mike Foster presented him with the Governor's Award for Special Recognition in 1997. At LSUS, he has been recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1978, and received the Outstanding Faculty Award in 1985, 1994, and 1997. Dr. Spaht has been the director of the Louisiana Preparatory Program (LaPREP) since 1992. Not only did he design and develop the program, but he also directs and acquires funding for the program which is directed to high-ability middle and high school students and their preparation for college studies.
