The LAPREP (Louisiana Preparatory Program) at LSUS hosted its annual LaPREP Awards Ceremony on Friday, July 24 in the LSUS University Center Theater. Shreveport City Councilman Roy Burrell was the featured speaker. Fifty one students participated in this year's ceremony.
LaPREP is a summer enrichment program for at risk youth. It identities, encourages and instructs at-risk middle and high school students in hopes that they will successfully complete a college program.
The program offers courses and seminars for two consecutive summers. The program costs approximately $50,000 per summer to operate and is funded entirely by grants and donations.

The LaPREP program's objective is to develop abstract reasoning, problem solving, and writing skills. Several engineers, scientists, and mathematicians discuss career opportunities with the students. Other aspects of the program include ACT preparation, college and career awareness, and field trips to local industries.
The program recently received national recognition when its director, Dr. Carlos Spaht, II, received the 1998 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Award for Greatest Public Service Benefiting Local Communities during the 1998 Jefferson Awards held in Washington, D.C. He received the award for his efforts in starting and sustaining the LaPREP program.
