Writing Help for Graduates

HOW THE WRITING CENTER CAN HELP GRADUATE STUDENTS

The LSUS Writing Center aids students at any level of their academic career, including students in their graduate programs. Writing tutors are trained to listen to writers’ needs to provide both suggestions and insight and are prepared to help you every step of the way. Rather than act as editors, tutors work alongside you to help you feel confident in your writing.

Tutors can help graduate students by:

  • Offering feedback on graduate-level writing, including theses, graduate and remedial courses, resumes, and cover letters
  • Pointing out irregularities, common grammatical mistakes, or ambiguity that can weaken a text
  • Allowing you to correct your own work
  • Helping you better understand your professors’ instructions and expectations

Tutoring session normally:

  • Last 25 or 55 minutes
  • Focus on one or two writing concerns
  • Identify aspects of the paper upon which you can improve
  • Utilize metacognitive strategies that act as a guide throughout the learning process

If you are unable to attend a session with an LSUS tutor, ThinkingStorm, LSUS’s online tutoring service, can help you succeed. They offer live, online sessions from 9 A.M to 3 A.M. to ensure your needs are met. Additionally, students may submit papers to be reviewed by trained professionals who will provide commentary within 24-48 hours. Please note that papers longer than twenty pages may require more time to review.
