Success Workshops

Many students discover the need to adjust their study strategies and life management skills to the college setting. Workshops are offered each semester to assist in this adjustment and move students toward their academic goals. All workshops meet in Administration Building, Room 215. 

AUGUST-SEPTEMBER

 

Assess Your Learning All successful students use strategies for managing their time, taking notes, organizing reading material and preparing for exams. National Wellness Week:  September 14th-18th Join us in the UC to learn about all the dimensions of wellness, and do assessments to discover if you are on track.

Always Out of Time? This workshop will focus on effective techniques to manage time through effective planning and goal setting. The workshop will meet in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Monday, September 14th @ 11am

Resume Walk-Ins: : In preparation for the upcoming Career Fair, students and alumni can go to the LSUS Office of Student Development without an appointment and receive resume assistance from a professional member of our staff.  Come to Administration Building, Room 230: Week of October 5th- 9th between 9am- 4pm

 

MIAW ART SHOW: October 5th-9th Student submitted art with mental health theme October 9th, 6pm: Art Opening with judges, snacks, and community speakers.

 

new! Career Fair Prep for Success:  What are you supposed to do at a career fair? Use this workshop to find out what to expect. Learn how to plan a strategy for the most effective and efficient use of your time at a fair, how to craft an introduction that makes a good impression, what to wear, and how to follow-up after the fair.  Join us in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Wednesday, October 7th @ 11am

Coping with Test Anxiety Anxiety often interferes with our ability to perform on exams. This workshop will focus on adjusting thoughts and behaviors to reduce test anxiety. The workshop will meet in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Monday, October 26th @ 11am

Learn Your Personality Type and Best Fit for a Career (Part 1):  Part 1 of this two-part hands-on workshop will include an assessment to determine your Myers-Briggs personality type, and then an overview of careers that that are considered optimal fits for future success.  You must pay a $20.00 fee that is due the first session.  Join us in the University Center Computer Lab on Wednesday, October 28th @ 11am

Reduce Your Stress! Do you feel stressed out? Overwhelmed with everyday life? Learn how mindfulness is a way to cope with the stresses of everyday life and improve satisfaction. The workshop will meet in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Monday November 2nd @ 11am

Learn Your Personality Type and Best Fit for a Career (Part 2):  Part 2 of this workshop series includes going over results of your Myers-Briggs personality type, and learning how your personality and skills relate to potential careers, and how to explore careers that fit your type and interests.  Join us in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Wednesday, Novemeber 4th @ 11am

Accepting Adversity & Committing to Change: This workshop will focus on strategies of acceptance and letting go.  Learn to accept unpleasant feelings associated with goals or experiences, and how to get past losses, without becoming paralyzed or giving up.  Join us in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Thursday, Novemeber 5th @ 12pm

Maintaining Motivation Sometimes college students lose motivation, which can lead to poor academic and personal success. This workshop focuses on how to get motivated and how to stay motivated on Monday Novemeber 9th @ 11am

 

Is Grad School right for me?: The decision to attend graduate school is huge. This workshop will cover the steps in determining whether graduate school is right for you and some ways to help you prepare for the application process Wednesday, November 11th @ 11am

STRESS FREE ZONE: November 16th A variety of activities to reduce stress in preparation for the holidays and finals

 

Improving Memory and Concentration College work often requires more than simple memorization of facts. However, improving memory and concentration can provide the foundation for putting ideas together and learning concepts. The workshop will meet in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Monday, November 16th @ 11am

 

Writing a Personal Statement: The personal statement is a major component of applying to graduate and professional school. Don’t let the task overwhelm you. This workshop will help you explore your story and plan the outlin on Wednesday, November 18th @ 11am

 

Assertiveness Training: College can pull us in many directions. Learning to be assertive can help you reduce stress and improve coping. This workshop will help students learn to effectively express themselves while also respecting the rights of others on Thursday, November 19th @ 12pm

Preparing for Finals Hopefully, you’ve prepared all semester and most of your work is already done. If not, this workshop will provide some last minute suggestions for final exam preparation. The workshop will meet in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Monday, November 23rd @ 11am AND Monday, November 30th @ 11am

Resumes for Veterans: Transferring Military Experience to the Civilian World:  In addition to learning the basics of building and writing an effective resume, this workshop will focus on how to incorporate military experience into a civilian job setting, including learning how to identify and promote transferrable skills.  Join us in the Administration Building, Room 215 on Wednesday, November 25th @ 11am
