Freshman Focus Mentoring

"A mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself."
~Oprah Winfrey

Beginning college is so exciting! It is also a huge adjustment, full of new experiences and choices. Sometimes it can be confusing. Wouldn't it be great if you could talk with another student about college? Someone who has been through it already and is in the know? Someone who could give some answers or provide some direction?

To help in your successful adjustment to LSUS, the Student Development & Counseling Center offers the Freshman Focus Mentoring Program. A program focusing on just YOU - the first-time freshman!

Freshman Focus Mentors are available to all incoming freshmen during their first semester on campus. Any LSUS student is welcome to schedule a meeting with a mentor. The main goal is to foster a connection where mentees feel comfortable approaching an experienced student who can guide them in the right direction.

Mentors are upperclassmen who meet with you each month during your first semester of college....to ease the transition, show you the ropes at LSUS, and help you make the most of your college experience.

What are the advantages of having a mentor?

  • Discussing life goals; both current and big picture
  • Monitoring progress in classes
  • Brainstorming which study strategies work well for the individual
  • Access to various effective academic approaches
  • Learning about campus resources
  • Knowledge about campus procedures and policies
  • Preparing for the academic advising process
  • Social support
  • Ease the transition to college life

Words of wisdom from previous mentees:

"Talk with your mentor, ask questions and listen with an open mind" ~ Emily Wright, Class of 2016
