Occasionally, students encounter difficult life situations that impact their ability to learn. To assist these students in their persistence toward their academic goals, Student Development provides free, confidential mental health counseling on a short-term basis. Counseling services facilitate personal growth and adjustment, educational enhancement and orientation, and career awareness and maturation. Difficulties requiring long-term or medical interventions are referred to appropriate resources in the Shreveport-Bossier community.
Who is eligible for counseling services ?
Counseling services are available to any currently enrolled LSUS undergraduate or graduate student. Students can be enrolled on either a full-time or part-time basis. All services are free, voluntary, and confidential.
Setting up an appointment
To see a counselor, call or visit Student Development, Administration Building, Room 230, 318-797-5365 between 8:00 and 4:30 Monday through Friday. An appointment will be arranged for you to meet with a staff member as soon as possible.
Confidentiality & Ethical Guidelines
The Student Development staff regards your inquiry, concerns, and discussions as private and confidential. The counselors are under ethical and legal obligations not to release any information regarding your contact with the center without your written permission. The counselors follow the ethical and legal guidelines of their profession and licensing board. These guidelines and the limits of confidentiality (for example, in situations where the student is of danger to themselves or others) are fully discussed during the student's initial session.
What to expect during the first session
At the time of your first appointment, you will be asked to describe your concerns and what you hope to achieve through counseling. This is an opportunity for you and your counselor to decide if counseling is right for you and on-campus services are best for you. You may decide to continue counseling and address your concerns with the staff counselor at LSU Shreveport or you may decide to seek assistance through other resources. At that time, you will be referred to resources which offer more or different kinds of services than Student Development.
