<headline>LSUS Professorships Named</headline>
<intro>LSUS is pleased to announce new recipients of one super professorship and two professorships to faculty and staff on campus.</intro>

Louisiana State University in Shreveport is pleased to announce new recipients of one super professorship and two professorships to faculty and staff on campus. The recipient of the Bobbie Hicks Endowed Super Professorship for the Pioneer Heritage Center Authors in April Program is Marty Young, director of the Pioneer Heritage Center. The recipient of the Hubert Humphries Endowed Professorship of History in the College of Liberal Arts is Dr. Cheryl White, instructor and social scientist in residence in the Department of History and Social Sciences, and the recipient of the William B. Wiener, Jr. Endowed Professorship of Archives and Historic Preservation in the Noel Library is Dr. Laura McLemore, archivist in the Noel Memorial Library.

To establish an endowed professorship, a university must raise $60,000 from private donations which the Board of Regents will match with $40,000 to equal a $100,000 endowed professorship. The endowed funds are then invested and its earned income benefits the recipient of the professorship. The principal amount is never distributed. Professorships established at LSUS are typically designated for a particular college or program by the donor with defined criteria for the recipient regarding use of the funds.

The State of Louisiana Board of Regents Endowed Chairs and Professorships Program helps LSUS attract and retain valuable faculty members and creates stronger economic development opportunities between our community and LSUS. The program began in 1986.

 <headline>LSUS Campus Now Wireless</headline>
<intro>Students, faculty and visitors to the LSUS campus now have access to wireless internet.</intro>

Students, faculty and visitors to the LSUS campus now have access to wireless internet. The effort to enhance the technological capabilities for the university was initiated by the Student Government Association last spring. Wireless access is available in every campus building and extends into the parking lots.

Joe Hayes, president of the LSUS Student Government Association, led a student coalition group to enact the wireless plan. "We really believed that getting the campus wireless was important for the students because it is an essential element of college life," Hayes said.

The LSUS Foundation donated an initial $10,000 to begin the efforts. Additional amounts were given by Foundation members George A. Khoury, Jr., Dr. Phillip Rozeman and Robert Bowman. The University matched the dollar amount pledged by the LSUS Foundation and its members. Funds were also taken from the technology fee budget that students pay every semester.

Louisiana State University in Shreveport is launching the 2007-2008 Annual Campaign for the LSUS Celestial Exploration Center, which will be constructed in Mansfield, La. on land donated by LSUS alumna Marcia Calhoun and her husband Riemer Calhoun, Jr. The center will consist of a laboratory building, a library building, a large classroom and a computer room.

"Space exploration and the study of our universe have never been more important to Shreveport-Bossier than today," said LSUS Chancellor Vincent Marsala, Ph.D. "With the Cyber Command Project knocking on the community's doors, LSUS is a committed partner in expanding its science-based programs and curriculums."

The center will benefit higher education through new LSUS courses, programs and research opportunities, kindergarten through 12th grade through weekly webcasts into classrooms and field trips and the general public through public lectures, star parties and summer camps.

The LSUS Celestial Exploration Center will offer a state-of-the-art computer operated telescope, Radio Telescope System, Solar Observatory, The Marcia and Riemer Calhoun, Jr. Celestial Amphitheater, a serene natural habitat and meeting rooms.

<headline>Dr. Spaht Named U.S. Professor of the Year</headline>
<intro>Dr. Carlos Spaht was named 2007 U.S. Professor of the Year in the Outstanding Master's Universities and Colleges category.</intro>

Dr. Carlos Spaht, professor of mathematics at LSUS for 35 years, was named 2007 U.S. Professor of the Year in the Outstanding Master's Universities and Colleges category. Four educators across the United States will be given the award today at a ceremony at the Willard InterContinental Washington in Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and administered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the awards recognize professors for their influence on teaching and their outstanding commitment to undergraduate students. A state Professor of the Year was also recognized in 40 states and the District of Columbia.

Spaht is a veteran teacher who remains convinced that there is always more to learn about teaching and motivating students. Spaht builds rapport with students as a pathway to learning, reaching them through a combination of lectures, small interactive groups and class projects. In one of his favorite courses, he teaches math majors to prove math theorems themselves. Spaht also created the LaPREP program in 1990 for high ability middle and high school students to encourage them to attend college and study math and science. Spaht and Harvey Rubin, professor of finance at LSUS, also created Financial Independence for Life which presents a curriculum of personal finance topics, which helps students begin a journey toward financial freedom early in life. Students learn the importance of financial planning, money management, income protection and investments. Each year, Spaht and his team spearhead a fundraising campaign in order to pay for the programs. Because many of the students come from low income families, LaPREP charges no tuition or fees and also provides free lunches, transportation and books.

"I believe that God put us here to serve Him by serving our fellow man," Spaht said. "And I really believe that I've done this to the best of my ability. When I first heard I won the award, in my prayers I thanked God and I realized that I really had tried to do the best that I could in that area. I've given all that I could in teaching my classes, making certain that I was prepared, putting everything I had into getting LaPREP going. It was a lot of hard work and I had a lot of setbacks, but I didn't give up because I felt like it was something that I could do that God had put on my heart."

The U.S. Professors of the Year program, created in 1981, is the only national initiative specifically designed to recognize excellence in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

"This year's four national Professors of the Year have had a tremendous impact on teaching and student learning in math, science and engineering at their institutions, in their communities and beyond," says John Lippincott, president of CASE. "They exemplify teaching at its best, bringing a commitment to student learning and a passionate devotion to their field of study that inspires students and challenges them to take on even the most demanding subjects."

Lee S. Shulman, president of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, notes that these teachers are "exemplars for all of us in the community of educators."

"They have demonstrated a dedication to their fields and to their profession and have used their own wisdom in ways that motivate and transform their students," Shulman says. "They instill both deep understanding and a love of learning, those dual accomplishments to which all fine teachers aspire."

This year's U.S. Professors of the Year winners were selected from a pool of more than 300 nominees. Judges select a national winner in each of four categories - baccalaureate colleges, community colleges, doctoral and research universities and master's universities and colleges - and then name state winners from other entries that meet the program's demanding criteria.

TIAA-CREF, a financial services and retirement investment organization, is the primary sponsor for the awards ceremony. Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honorary, will sponsor an evening Congressional reception for the winners at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Other sponsors include the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, the American Association of Community Colleges, the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the American Association of University Professors, the Association of Community College Trustees, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the Council of Independent Colleges and the National Council of University Research Administrators.

About Carnegie: Founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1905 and chartered in 1906 by an Act of Congress, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching is an independent policy and research center with a primary mission "to do and perform all things necessary to encourage, uphold and dignify the profession of the teacher and the cause of higher education." The improvement of teaching and learning is central to all of the work of the foundation.

About CASE: The Council for Advancement and Support of Education is one of the largest international associations of education institutions, serving more than 3,300 universities, colleges, schools and related organizations in 55 countries. CASE is the leading resource for professional development, information and standards in the fields of education fundraising, communications and alumni relations.

About TIAA-CREF: TIAA-CREF is a national financial services organization and the leading provider of retirement services in the academic, research, medical and cultural fields.

 <headline>LSUS-Trained Teachers Among State's Top Performers</headline>
<intro>Teachers prepared by LSUS have received high marks in a ground-breaking study released by the Louisiana Board of Regents.</intro>

Teachers prepared by Louisiana State University in Shreveport have received high marks in a ground-breaking study released by the Louisiana Board of Regents. The Value-Added Assessment of Teacher Preparation is a study sponsored by the Louisiana Board of Regents and conducted by Dr. George Noell, a professor of psychology at LSU in Baton Rouge.

Noell found that recent education graduates from LSUS received consistently positive ratings across the three subject areas which were examined. Of the thirteen institutions included in the study of instruction in classrooms from the fourth to the ninth grades, LSUS teachers ranked 1st in mathematics, 3rd in sciences, and 7th in social studies. The assessment does not take into account the recent redesigns of teacher preparation programs, and those changes are not reflected in the data Noell used in the study.

Noell's work is being hailed as the first of its kind in the nation. It is part of the Louisiana Teacher Quality Initiative which examines the relationships of the test scores of public school students in certain grades and subject areas with their teachers' preparation programs. The four-year study used standardized achievement test data provided by the Louisiana Department of Education in the areas of mathematics, science and social studies. The study examined students in grades four through nine from sixty-eight school districts across the state.

"The study confirms what we have known anecdotally for some time, that the teachers being produced by LSUS are doing well in our states' classrooms," said Dr. Dave Gustavson, dean of the LSUS College of Education and Human Development. "We hear this frequently from principals and other school officials. It's good to have statistical evidence which supports those feelings. We will use the results of the study to make sure that our graduates become even more effective teachers in the future."

Louisiana's Value-Added Teacher Preparation Assessment Model studies can be found online at http://asa.regents.state.la.us/TE/value_added_model. <headline>TeachLSUS Summer Deadline</headline>
<intro>TeachLSUS wants to increase the number of certified teachers in math, biology, chemistry, physics and special education in Louisiana.</intro>

TeachLSUS wants to increase the number of certified teachers in math, biology, chemistry, physics and special education in Louisiana. TeachLSUS continually recruits professionals in other career fields into the teaching profession to make a difference in our community. The goal is to prepare candidates for fulfilling careers in the classroom.

TeachLSUS strives to continue improving student achievement by recruiting and training highly talented individuals who have well rounded backgrounds and the ability to thrive in challenging situations. The TeachLSUS alternative certification program is designed for individuals who do not have a background in education. However, a Bachelor's Degree and a 2.5 overall undergraduate GPA are the minimum eligibility requirements for the program.

TeachLSUS applicants should be prepared to begin their certification coursework in June 2008. Once accepted into the TeachLSUS program, candidates are eligible to be hired as fulltime classroom teachers and will earn a starting teachers salary and benefits while pursuing certification. Throughout the program, participants will have access to a network of ongoing support from LSUS faculty to help the participants promote student achievement in their classrooms.

The final application deadline for summer 2008 is March 13, 2008. All interested individuals are encouraged to submit their application early. Detailed information can be found at www.LSUS.EDU/TeachLSUS .

 <headline>College of Business Reaccredited</headline>
<intro>The LSUS College of Business Administration has achieved accreditation of its programs in business administration by AACSB International.</intro>

The College of Business Administration at Louisiana State University in Shreveport has achieved reaffirmation of accreditation of its bachelor's and master's degree programs in business administration by recent action of the Board of Directors of AACSB International - The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The official announcement was made December 14, 2007 in Tampa, Fla. As of December 2007, only 554 institutions have earned AACSB-International accreditation world wide.

"It takes a great deal of commitment and determination to earn AACSB accreditation," said Jerry Trapnell, executive vice president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB International. "These schools have met rigorous standards of excellence, as well as made a commitment to ongoing improvement that ensures that they will deliver a high quality education to students."

To achieve accreditation, business programs must satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to strategic management of resources, interactions of faculty and students in the educational process, and achievement of learning goals in degree programs. These standards are mission-linked. During the accreditation process, LSUS was visited and evaluated by business school deans with detailed knowledge of management education, applying accreditation standards that are widely accepted in the educational community.

"It's gratifying to have the efforts of our faculty recognized. Our student friendly focus and collegial work environment are key factors that have allowed the College of Business to retain faculty who strive to deliver quality in the classroom", said Dr. Charlotte Jones, dean of the College of Business. "We look forward to applying these same standards of excellence to the Master of Health Care Administration program, which officially becomes part of the College of Business in fall of 2008."

"I am proud of the outstanding work and dedication of Dean Charlotte Jones and the College of Business faculty and students in obtaining this reaccreditation," said Dr. Vincent Marsala, chancellor of LSUS. "Receiving this highest honor reaffirms LSUS' commitment to our students and the business community of Shreveport-Bossier."

AACSB International is an association of more than 1,100 educational institutions, businesses and other organizations in 70 countries that are dedicated to the advancement of business education worldwide. AACSB International is the longest serving and largest global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees in business and accounting. The association also is the business education community's professional development organization, conducting a wide array of conference and seminar programs at various locations around the world. www.aacsb.edu
