| LSUS Institute to offer two new programs in spring
10/21/06
The LSUS Institute for Human Services and Public Policy will launch two new programs in spring 2007. “Life Course and Aging Studies” classes will be offered as an academic minor, while the “Certificate in Service Learning” curriculum is a 12-credit-hour program available to students of all majors.
The Life Course and Aging Studies minor offers students an opportunity to obtain knowledge and skills helpful in understanding and working in areas of aging and the elderly. The courses are designed to easily fit into a student’s major as electives or core curriculum.
The courses will prepare students to work in various environments including, but not limited to, facility management, marketing, healthcare and long-term care, and counseling and social services. Students can register for the minor through their advisor.

The Certificate in Service Learning is an approach to learning that benefits students, faculty and community organizations by integrating service experiences into existing curriculum. By bringing “real world” experiences into the classroom, service learning enhances the learning experience and expands a student’s sense of civic responsibility.
Examples of service learning experiences include individual volunteer opportunities, class projects, episodic class volunteer experiences and internships. Faculty offering courses with service learning components have access to a database of volunteer opportunities available within the community that is maintained by the Institute of Human Services and Public Policy.
The first courses qualifying for credit toward the certificate will be offered in the spring 2007 semester. Students interested in the obtaining the certificate must first register for an introductory workshop offered through the Institute.
