one win away from championship
10/20/06
The LSUS Lady Pilots soccer team secured no worse than a tie for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship by defeating the University of Mobile Lady Rams, 2-1, today. A win in either of their two remaining games will make them the outright champions.
Lacy Biggs, a senior midfielder from Alvarado, Texas, scored a goal in the first half, but the Lady Rams matched it to go to the break even. Two minutes into the second half, Julia Vaughan, a sophomore midfielder/forward from Shreveport, scored what became the winning goal.
“It was a total team effort,” LSUS head soccer coach Jed Jones said, “against a very good University of Mobile team. They’re ranked 14th in the country. You don’t beat a team that good without a total team effort.”
The win gives the Lady Pilots (13-2, 7-1 GCAC) a two-game lead over Mobile (12-5, 6-3) in the conference standings with two games remaining. The Loyola University Wolfpack (2-10, 0-6) visits “The Swamp” on the LSUS campus Sunday at 1 p.m. to face the Lady Pilots. LSUS wraps up the season at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 28) against the Belhaven College Lady Blazers (9-6, 4-4) in Jackson, Miss.
The Lady Pilots are expected to open play in the NAIA Region XIII tournament on Nov. 3.
