LSUS student to compete
in World weightlifting championships
09/25/06
Kendrick Farris, an LSUS junior, will compete in the 85 kg category as a member of the USA men’s team in the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships on Thursday, Oct. 5, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Farris will leave for Santo Domingo from Shreveport Regional Airport Friday (Sept. 29) and return home on Sunday, Oct. 8.
The youngest member of the eight-man USA World Team, the 20-year-old C. E. Byrd High School graduate, started lifting at age 11 under the guidance of Dr. Kyle Pierce, an LSUS associate professor of kinesiology and health science, at the LSUS USA Weightlifting Development Center.
“Kendrick has been the top lifter, kilo-for-kilo, in his last three domestic meets,” Pierce said, “including the 2006 National Championships, the 2006 National Junior Championships [for lifters 20 years of age and under] and the 2005 American Open Championships.” As a result, Farris is the reigning National Champion and American Open Champion in the 85 kg category, and won the National Junior Championship in his weight category for the third consecutive year.
In addition to his current placement on the USA World Team, Farris has been a member of the last three Junior World teams, and competed in seven international championships, including Korea, Russia and China, before heading to the Dominican Republic for his eighth trip outside the U.S.
