LSUS weightlifting event to be Katrina fundraiser

The 2005 Louisiana Governor’s Games Weightlifting Championships hosted by the LSUS Weightlifting Club will be held Sept. 24 as scheduled, but will be a fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina victims.

“Although we have about 1,000 evacuees from South Louisiana currently housed in the Health & Physical Education Building at LSUS,” said Dr. Kyle Pierce, associate professor of kinesiology and health science and director of the LSUS USA Weightlifting Development Center, “we still have access to our training facility where we normally host this event. The normal $20 entry fee for this competition will be donated to the LSUS Foundation Emergency Relief Fund to help those affected by Hurricane Katrina.”

All USA Weightlifting School Age, Junior, Senior and Master categories will be included in the competition, with medals for first, second and third awarded in each category. Weigh-in schedules are posted in “What’s New” on the Web site www.lsus.edu/weightlifting.
