students to stage
mock presidential election Oct. 26
10/19/04
Students
at LSUS will step to the polls Tuesday (Oct. 26) in a mock election
to determine who they would prefer to occupy the White House for
the next four years. LSUS faculty will also be eligible to vote.
Voting
booths on the campus mall in front of the University Center will
be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and election organizers promise a
“complete absence of hanging, pregnant or any other kind of
‘chad.’” Campus political clubs will be permitted
to electioneer in the vicinity of the voting booths, “but
not too close,” says senior political science major Eric Hammons,
the principal organizer of the mock election.
Louisiana
Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell will address students
at 10:35 a.m. to encourage them to participate in the political
process. Campbell’s address will be delivered from a stage
also set up in front of the University Center. In case of inclement
weather, all activities will be inside the University Center.
In
a move that could warrant consideration by state elections officials,
all LSUS students who cast a ballot will receive a “door prize”
ticket for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to the LSUS Bookstore.
The results of the mock election will be announced at 3 p.m.
The
event is sponsored by the Student Activities Board with the assistance
of the LSUS International Lincoln Center’s American Studies
program, the LSUS Institute for Human Services and Public Policy’s
American Humanics program, the LSUS Debate Team and the campus Amnesty
International Club.
