LSUS
student-teacher seminar
receives State Farm support
06/10/04
Shreveport-Bossier
area middle and high school students are sharing a learning environment
with middle and high school teachers at LSUS this summer in two
“Financial Independence for Life” seminar sessions presented
by the Louisiana Consortium of Insurance and Financial Services’
(LCIFS) Institute of Financial Literacy. State Farm Insurance is
supporting the seminar with a $10,500 contribution.
The curriculum
of personal financial planning topics in the two-week sessions is
empowering the 50 students to develop awareness and skills sufficient
to live with financial security and independence. At the same time
middle and high school teachers are learning how to teach this same
information to students in their classrooms.
The seminars
are led by Dr. Harvey Rubin, LCIFS director and professor of finance,
and Dr. Carlos Spaht II, director of the program and professor of
mathematics. Topics being covered include creating a budget, savings
and investments, stocks, bonds, mutual funds and annuities, credit
cards, types of insurance, risk tolerance and the time value of
money. Students will study the mathematics of finance: reading and
creating graphs, calculating percentages, discounts, simple and
compound interest and will use graphing calculators to graph functions
and do sophisticated financial computations.
