Tennis
tournament opens
LSUS girls, women in sports agenda
01/25/04
A tennis
tournament postponed from a rainy Saturday to a sunny – albeit
blustery – Sunday afternoon opened an expanded list of activities
surrounding the LSUS observance of the 18th Annual National Girls
and Women in Sports Day on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
The
tournament featured competition in one level of mixed doubles and
three levels of women’s doubles. Here are the results. Mixed
Doubles 7.0: 1st - Robin Harris and Gordy Ward, 2nd - Diane Cord
and J.D. Hartley; Women’s Doubles 8.0: 1st - Sue Allander
and Kate Chance, 2nd - Anita Randall and Vicki Owen; Women’s
Doubles 7.0: 1st - Claire Moisel and Becky Koll, 2nd - Cay Evans
and Cheryl Crain; Women’s Doubles 6.0: 1st - Leah Muslow and
Dana George, 2nd - Sondra Vickers and Susan Easterling.
Aiding
the competition at the tennis complex on the LSUS campus were new
wind screens donated by the Northwest Louisiana Community Tennis
Association. The screens, valued at about $5,000, effectively blocked
what would otherwise have been troublesome breezes for the players.
NGWSD
activities continue Saturday with a 5K race, a 5K kids race and
a one-mile walk on the LSUS campus. The race, managed by Sportspectrum,
starts at 8:30 a.m. A recognition ceremony in the LSUS University
Center Theater on Wednesday, Feb. 4, will honor all female athletes
of any age, sport and level. The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and
will feature the Caddo Middle Magnet dance line and a choral group
from Midway Elementary Professional Development School. The ceremony
is open to the public.
The
activities will culminate with the Second Annual Conference on Girls’
and Women’s Physical Activity and Sport on Friday and Saturday,
Feb. 6-7, in the LSUS University Center. A highlight of the conference
is the Friday noon luncheon, which is open to the public and costs
$15.
