Lady Pilots Xed by No. 13 Xavier, 59-40
01/22/2004
The LSUS Lady Pilots hosted NAIA 13th-ranked Xavier University tonight
but were unable to mine the Gold Nuggets, dropping the contest,
59-40. The Lady Pilots were coming off their biggest win of season,
a Saturday victory over Southern University of New Orleans.
The Gold Nuggets started with some very intense defensive pressure
that created 14 LSUS turnovers in the first half. Courtney Williams
led the offensive attack for Xavier going 3 for 3 from behind the
3-point line, a tally good enough to lead all scoring for the first
half. Kendera Monnete led the Lady Pilots with 6 points and 2 blocked
shots in the half. Renalda Stafford and Dyamond Hogg each added
5 points, but the Lady Pilots trailed 39-22 at the break.
Xavier
continued to control the tempo in the second half, but a better
defensive effort by the Lady Pilots held the Gold Nuggets to only
20 points in the half. LSUS, however, could not pick up its scoring
pace and was held to only 18 points in the second half.
Alisson
Williams finished with a game high 9 rebounds and was also the games
top scorer with 13 points for Xavier. Renalda Stafford and Kendera
Monette finished with 8 points and 4 rebounds each for the Lady
Pilots.
The
Lady Pilots (5-11, 1-5 GCAC), will be in action again this weekend
when they travel to Mobile for double-headers with the Pilots against
the University of Mobile Rams Saturday and the Spring Hill College
Badgers Monday night.
