| Students,
teachers to learn together
in LSUS seminar 06/09/03
Eighth-
and ninth-grade students will share a learning environment with
middle and high school teachers for two weeks at LSUS in a “Financial
Independence for Life” seminar presented by the Louisiana
Consortium of Insurance and Financial Services’ Institute
of Financial Literacy.
The
curriculum of personal financial planning topics will empower the
25 students to develop awareness and skills sufficient to live with
financial security and independence. At the same time, 12 middle
and high school teachers will learn how to pass the same information
along to other students in their classrooms.
“In
the world we live in, financial security is serious business,”
said Virginia Shehee, head of Kilpatrick Life Insurance Company
and a long-time supporter of the LCIFS. “Without proper planning
and implementation, young people will be left behind. I am so excited
about the ‘Financial Independence for Life’ program,
because it will enable participants to begin their journey to financial
freedom.”
The
seminar, which will be led by Dr. Harvey Rubin, LCIFS director,
and Dr. Carlos Spaht II, LSUS professor of mathematics and finance,
will include paycheck analysis, creating a budget, savings and investment
options, bonds and mutual funds, types of insurance, risk tolerance
and the time value of money.
(Note:
The seminar will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday, June
16-27. All participant slots have been filled. For information,
