The LSUS Alumni Association presented Michael H. Woods with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award during commencement ceremonies held in May. The award honors LSUS graduates who have distinguished themselves through service to the university and their communities. Last year’s honoree was Margaret W. Kinsey, class of 1984.

Woods, who was born and raised in Shreveport, was one of the first students from LSUS to receive a four-year degree when he graduated in general studies in 1975. He also received a bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Oklahoma in 1977, a law degree from the LSU Law Center in 1980, and a masters degree in Environmental Science from LSU in Baton Rouge in 1999.

He has been an important contributor to the success of the university for many years. Woods currently serves on the LSUS Foundation’s Board of Directors, the LSUS Chancellor’s Community Advisory Council and chaired the Steering Committee for the 3rd Annual LSUS RiverBend Revue, held September 12, 2001, which presented the Pilot of the Year award. He is a member of the LSUS Alumni Association Board of Directors and the LSUS Athletic Committee as well as teaching an administrative law course in the LSUS Master of Human Services Administration program.

Mike was appointed by Governor Foster to the Board of Trustees of the Louisiana System of Colleges and Universities, which oversees eight universities including Louisiana Tech, University of Louisiana Monroe, and Grambling State University.

He contributes a leading role in community affairs and has served as past president of the Executive Committee for the Red Cross, the YMCA, Holiday in Dixie, and the Norwela Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He currently serves on the Southern Region Board of the Boy Scouts of America and is the past Southern Region President. He also serves on the National Board for American Humanics, Inc.

Active in his family’s oil and gas business, he is married to Tracie Woods and is the father of four children. His parents are the late Dalton and Sugar Woods, who are also distinguished community leaders.
