$400,000 Grant From the National Science Foundation to Provide Computer
Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships for Students
09/13/01
Shreveport, La. Louisiana State University in Shreveport
has received a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation
(NSF) to fund a university project which will provide scholarships
for LSUS students to enable them to pursue degrees in computer science,
engineering, and mathematics.
The project,
Broadening Access to Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics
Careers, will allow academically talented, but financially needy
students to pursue degrees in these disciplines as well as increase
enrollment of academically-talented, low income students including
under represented groups.
The NSF grant
will provide funds to provide 30 students per semester with scholarships.
The NSF funding will also support programs for students including
mentoring and career counseling. The scholarships will be $1,500
per semester of $3,000 per year.
The project's
goal is to provide increased educational opportunities to meet the
demand for computer scientists, mathematicians, engineers, and technicians.
LSUS has established an excellent track record of working with industry
and government in improving technology education and this grant
will further enhance these efforts.
Ultimately the
project will positively affect student involvement in these disciplines
by increasing enrollment and retention, improving the educational
opportunities available to students, improving career awareness
and choices, and strengthening partnerships with business and industry.
