Three Caddo
teachers receive fellowships
05/07/02
Three Caddo
Parish middle school teachers have been selected for full fellowships
from the LSUS International Lincoln Center for American Studies
to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Summer Teacher Institute.
Michael R. Caldwell,
Herndon Magnet School; Greta Whitlock, Ridgewood Middle School,
and Catherine J. Green, Caddo Middle Magnet, will receive the fellowships,
which cover tuition, evening programs, excursions to Jamestown Settlement
and Yorktown, lodging, all meals, transportation and educational
material.
Caldwell has
taught American history for 11 years in local schools and holds
a M.Ed. from LSUS. He has taught American history at Herndon Magnet
School for one year.
Whitlock teaches
American history at Ridgewood Middle School. She received her teaching
degree from Louisiana Tech. She has taught for five years.
Green has taught
for 26 years, the last 21 years as an American history teacher at
Caddo Middle Magnet. She received her teaching degree from LSUS.
Were
delighted with the quality of our most gifted local teachers who
have worked long and hard to develop an interest in the American
heritage among young students, Dr. William D. Pederson, American
studies chair at LSUS, said. This is a way to show our appreciation
to these teachers who are often the most active supporters of the
International Lincoln Center.
The International
Lincoln Center for American Studies is the largest privately endowed
program at LSUS. Founded in 1982, it offers a variety of year-round
activities for students, faculty, and the community. It holds an
annual fall Lincoln lecture, spring symposium, and summer Washington
Semester. In 1998 it launched its fellowships for Caddo Parish middle
school teachers to attend the Colonial Williamsburg Summer Institute.
