LSUS Foundation provides $15,000 for scholarships

The LSUS Foundation has provided a total of $15,000 in matching funds for two endowed scholarships that benefit LSUS students, the Earl Gray and Dorothy Adams McCalla Endowed Scholarship in Education and the Kathie Giddings Troquille Memorial Scholarship.

LSUS weightlifters bring home
American Open Championships honors

Five LSUS weightlifters finished in the top five of their weight categories at the American Open Championships Dec. 1-3 in the Birmingham, Ala. The five combined for two first-place finishes – including an American record lift and the meet’s best lifter award – a second place, third place and fifth place.

“TeachLSUS” is looking for you! The goal of TeachLSUS is to select and train outstanding teacher candidates for careers as professional educators in K-12 schools. TeachLSUS, designed specifically for candidates who do not have backgrounds in education, is a research-based program to give potential teachers an in-depth study of materials and methods; classroom management; psychological characteristics of children and adolescents, and effective instructional techniques. Participants of TeachLSUS may pursue certification while teaching in their own classroom and earning a salary.

The “LSUS Jazz,” Louisiana State University in Shreveport’s jazz band, will present its fall semester concert at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the LSUS University Center Theater. The concert, which will also feature the debut of the LSUS University Choral, is free and open to the public.

LSUS unveiled plans today for the Dr. Lacy and Edie Williams Circle of Excellence Plaza, the largest single privately funded capital project in the university’s 40-year history.

The Williamses are contributing $150,000 as the lead donors and underwriters of the brick plaza.

LSUS Institute to offer two new programs in spring

The LSUS Institute for Human Services and Public Policy will launch two new programs in spring 2007. “Life Course and Aging Studies” classes will be offered as an academic minor, while the “Certificate in Service Learning” curriculum is a 12-credit-hour program available to students of all majors.

Lady Pilots soccer team ‘walks’ to GCAC championship

The LSUS Lady Pilots soccer team won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship Saturday morning without ever taking the field. The Loyola University (N.O.) Wolfpack women’s soccer team forfeited the game to the Lady Pilots scheduled for tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 22) at “The Swamp” on the LSUS campus.

The LSUS Lady Pilots soccer team secured no worse than a tie for the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference championship by defeating the University of Mobile Lady Rams, 2-1, today. A win in either of their two remaining games will make them the outright champions.

LSUS to announce
signature landmark Oct. 24 at 10:30 a.m.

LSUS will conduct a news conference and reception at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, in the Assembly Room on the third floor of Noel Memorial Library to announce plans for the creation of a signature landmark on the campus. This exciting project, which is being underwritten by generous friends of LSUS, is part of the university’s year-long 40 th Anniversary celebration and is the centerpiece of the 2006-07 Annual Campaign.

LSUS Debate Team to host 32nd annual tournament

The LSUS campus will be invaded Friday through Sunday, Nov. 10-12, by teams of students from more than 25 schools in 10 states to compete in the 32 nd Annual Red River Swing debate and individual events tournament. The competition will be hosted by the 2003 IPDA (International Public Debate Association) National Champion LSUS Debate Team and the LSUS Communications Department.

The Fall LSUS American Humanics Volunteer Fair will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 17) on the LSUS Mall outside the University Center and will feature representatives from organizations such as the Philadelphia Center, Sci-Port Discovery Center, American Red Cross, New Horizons, Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal, and the Robinson Film Center.

LSUS ranked No. 2 nationally; picked to win conference

The LSUS Pilots basketball team is No. 2 in the Street & Smith’s Sports Annuals’ College Basketball Preview pre-season NAIA national ranking and has been picked by Gulf Coast Athletic Conference coaches to win the conference championship for a third consecutive year. Street & Smith’s also picked LSUS senior guard Josh Porter as one of its five pre-season NAIA First Team All-Americans.

Kermit Poling appointed acting KDAQ general manager

Kermit Poling has been named acting general manager of Public Radio station KDAQ and the Red River Radio Network. Poling has been the classical announcer for the public radio network since the summer of 2005 and is the long-time host of Red River Radio’s regional symphony broadcasts.

 

LSUS soccer team to play at home tomorrow, Saturday

The LSUS Lady Pilots soccer team will host two Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rivals at “The Swamp” on the LSUS campus tomorrow and Saturday. The Lady Pilots, 9-1 (3-0 GCAC), are on top of the conference standings and are ranked No. 5 in NAIA Region XIII.

LSUS enrollment down less than statewide average

Preliminary enrollment figures at LSUS show the local state university’s overall decrease of only 1.57 percent is significantly less than the statewide enrollment drop of 6.97 percent, according to a report released by the Louisiana Board of Regents. The traditional benchmark 14 th day report puts LSUS total enrollment at 4,023 students, 64 fewer than on the same reporting day in 2005.

in World weightlifting championships

Kendrick Farris, an LSUS junior, will compete in the 85 kg category as a member of the USA men’s team in the 2006 World Weightlifting Championships on Thursday, Oct. 5, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Farris will leave for Santo Domingo from Shreveport Regional Airport Friday (Sept. 29) and return home on Sunday, Oct. 8.

Swami Parthasarathy to speak twice on Vedanta

The LSUS India Studies Program, the LSUS Foundation, and the Sadhu Vaswani Hindu Cultural Center will sponsor a guest lecture by Swami Parthasarathy, widely regarded as the greatest exponent of Vedanta, the ancient philosophy of India, on Wednesday, Oct 4, at 7 p.m. in the LSUS University Center Theater. His lecture, “Vedanta: Ancient Wisdom in Modern Life,” will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. by a light refreshment reception.

With the receipt of matching funds from the Louisiana Board of Regents for two professorships, LSUS now has fully endowed three chairs, two super professorships and 15 professorships. The university also has one partially funded endowed chair, two partially funded super professorships and six partially funded professorships. Contributions received from donors and the Board of Regents for the fully endowed LSUS chairs and professorships has reached a milestone total of $4.903 million.

associate vice chancellor

LSUS has named Susannah Orman Stinson associate vice chancellor for university development. The Franklinton native received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Louisiana Tech University in May 2000, and Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Civil Law degrees from the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in May 2003. She is a member of the Shreveport Bar Association and Louisiana State Bar Association and is a provisional candidate for membership in the Junior League of Shreveport-Bossier. She lives in Shreveport with her husband, Ford E. Stinson III.

Dr. Dave Gustavson, dean of the LSUS College of Education and Human Development, was among deans of Louisiana’s 21 public and private colleges of education who were recognized Thursday (May 25) by Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, the Louisiana Legislature and the Board of Regents for leading the charge to accomplish a feat most states have found elusive – the successful redesign of teacher preparation and educational leadership programs at all universities in the state. These efforts have resulted in Louisiana’s recognition as a national leader in the improvement of teacher preparation and educational leadership programs.

LSUS names Kristin Fiser HR assistant director

LSUS has named Kristin Fiser as assistant director of human resources management. The Captain Shreve High School graduate received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northwestern State University. She comes to LSUS after spending nine years with Robert Half International, a staffing firm in Pleasanton, Calif., where she was a senior curriculum developer in the Training Department.

LSUS graduated 272 students at its spring commencement exercises Wednesday evening at CenturyTel Center in Bossier City. Graduate degrees were earned by 64 students and 208 students were awarded undergraduate degrees.

LSUS inducts 30 into business honor society

Only a select few are called “The Best in Business,” and 30 LSUS College of Business Administration students earned the title this year. Four graduate student, 16 seniors and 10 juniors have been inducted into the LSUS chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International.

LSUS to celebrate Mozart with Symphony concert

“The Eye of the Beholder,” an exhibit of the (Robert) Menasco Studio Collection, will open in the LSUS Noel Memorial Library Archives and Special Collections Thursday with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Thurman C. Smith, noted photographer and a longtime friend of the Menascos, will speak briefly about his recollection of them at 6 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. The exhibit will run through May 26. Marc and Rob Menasco, sons of the noted photographer, will attend the reception with their wives, according to Dr. Laura McLemore, LSUS assistant librarian and archivist.

LSUS hosts GCAC tournament opener at home

The LSUS Pilots will open the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament at home as the No. 1 seed at 7 p.m. Thursday (March 2) against No. 8 seed Southern University-New Orleans.

LSUS Alumni Association Hibernia Pilots Golf Classic
set for Friday, May 5, at Olde Oaks Golf Club

The 8th Annual LSUS Alumni Association Hibernia Pilots Golf Classic will fire off with a noon shotgun start Friday, May 5, at Olde Oaks Golf Club in Haughton. Hibernia National Bank will again serve as signature sponsor for the event and Congressman Jim McCrery has signed on as honorary tournament director.

Williamsburg fellowships available to Caddo teachers

Three Caddo Parish American history teachers will be offered full fellowships to attend the July 5-12 Summer Teacher Institute to be held in Colonial Williamsburg. The scholarship will be provided by the International Lincoln Center for American Studies at LSUS.

2006 LSUS Lincoln Lecture Series speaker named

Dr. John F. Marszalek, the W. L. Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History at Mississippi State University, will deliver the annual Frank and Virginia Williams Lincoln Lecture at LSUS at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, in the LSUS Science Lecture Auditorium (behind the Science building). The program is free and open to the public.

Piatigorsky founder to headline concert at LSUS

Cellist Evan Drachman, founder of the Piatigorsky Foundation and grandson of renowned cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, will perform cello masterpieces with pianist Lisa Bergman in a one-hour concert at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 9) in the LSUS University Center Theater. The concert, sponsored by the James Smith Noel Collection, is free and open to the public.

Noted astrophysicist to speak at LSUS Feb. 9

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, a noted astrophysicist, author and director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City, will discuss “The Cosmic Connection” in the LSUS University Center Theater at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9. The presentation is free and open to the public.

TeachLSUS informational session set for Thursday

An informational meeting concerning the TeachLSUS program will be held in the LSUS University Center’s Caddo-Bossier Room from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday (Jan. 19). The priority application deadline for coursework beginning this summer is Feb. 1 and the final application deadline is March 31.
