New course uses Shreveport, Massachusetts resources

A new interdisciplinary and multi-campus Bioinformatics course will be offered this spring using faculty from LSUS, LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell.

LSUS graduates 315 at Fall Commencement

LSUS graduated 315 students at its fall commencement exercises Wednesday (Dec. 14) at CenturyTel Center in Bossier City. Among them were 91 students who earned their degrees at the end of the summer term in August and 224 who completed requirements for their degrees in December.

The Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band at LSUS will present its Founders Concert on Sunday (Dec. 4) at 3 p.m. in the LSUS University Center Theater. The concert, which is free and open to the public, is dedicated to the founders of the band, Irving Selber, John Richie, Hyman Gardsbane and B. L. Shaw.

LSUS professor named Educator of the Year

Dr. Lisa Burke, an LSUS associate professor of management, has been named Educator of the Year by the Southwestern Region of Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). Nominated by Northwest Louisiana SHRM, Burke was received the award from the regional organization at its conference in Fort Worth in front of more than 2,000 HR professionals.

LSUS Volunteer Fair tomorrow to feature 18 nonprofits

Representatives of 18 nonprofit organizations will be on hand tomorrow (Thursday, Nov. 10) to talk with LSUS faculty, staff and students, as well as the general public, at the LSUS Volunteer Fair sponsored by the LSUS American Humanics program. Among the nonprofits represented at the fair, which will be from 10 a.m. to Noon in the University Center Lobby, will be Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal, Goodwill Industries, The Gingerbread House, Volunteers of America and YWCA of NWLA.

Evening of Ghazals set for tonight

India Studies is sponsoring an evening of Ghazals (a traditional form of Near Eastern poetry set to music – click here for more details) tonight (Monday, Oct. 31) at Utsav Restaurant (8660 Fern Avenue, in the Bert Kouns auto mall opposite Posados) at 6:30. Tickets (includes a light dinner) are $30 at the door. The featured artist is Sudhir Narain, an acclaimed Ghazal singer from Agra, India. Sudhir has been performing for worldwide audiences for many years. He has performed in more than 800 concerts worldwide in the past 17 years including the USA, Canada, UK, Tanzania and Kenya. LSUS, Centenary flag football champs to vie for ‘city’ title

The LSUS Recreational Sports Flag Football Champions will compete against their respective Centenary College Recreational Sports Flag Football Champions for the title of “Inner City” Football Champions beginning at 7 o’clock tonight (Monday, Oct. 10) at the Jones Rice field on the Centenary College campus. Two games will feature championship contests for the titles in the Men’s and Co-Ed Divisions, and will be played for traveling trophies and “bragging rights.”

The games are free and open to the public.

LSUS announces $2 million
in endowments at annual dinner

LSUS announced the establishment of six new endowments totaling more than $2 million Thursday at its annual LSUS Foundation Fall Appreciation Dinner. The total includes one new $1 million endowed chair and three new $100,000 endowed professorships and two bequests totaling more than $700,000 for scholarship endowments.

LSUS has three chairs, 16 professorships

With the receipt of matching funds from the Louisiana Board of Regents for one chair and three professorships, LSUS now has fully endowed three chairs, one endowed super professorships and 15 endowed professorships. The university also has three partially funded professorships. Total contributions received from donors and the Board of Regents for the fully endowed LSUS chairs and professorships is $4.8 million.

Mark Hicks, an IBM senior enablement architect, will discuss “open standards” and “Eclipse” in separate presentations hosted by the LSUS Computer Science Department Tuesday (Oct. 4). The LSUS International Lincoln Center is referred to as the only “Lincoln Destination” in the Deep South by “The Legacy of Lincoln,” a new reference work on America’s 16th president by Pamela Oldham, published by Penguin Group in New York (Alpha). The book describes the Center as a “unique collection of documents and artifacts that focus on Lincoln’s legacy in the United States and abroad.” The book sells for $16.95 in paperback.

Hurricane emergency relief needs outlined

As evacuees from South Louisiana continue to come to the Shreveport area seeking shelter, the American Red Cross and LSUS are asking for assistance from the community. In addition to its primary Emergency Shelter in the LSUS Health and Physical Education Building, the Red Cross has now opened another shelter at Hirsch Coliseum at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds. The Northwest Louisiana Veterinary Association and the Humane Society have established pet centers adjacent to both the LSUS and Hirsch shelters.

There apparently has been some confusion among radio listeners and TV watchers with regard to news reports about the Baton Rouge campus of LSU being closed and misinterpreting those reports to mean that LSUS is closed.

LSUS group seeks public input for safe exercise trail

Mark Grant, a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School and a sports director for the CBS television network, will lead a faculty of journalism professionals in the summer Journalism Camp June 20-24 at LSUS. The camp, sponsored by the Young Journalists Mentoring Program and the Louisiana Scholastic Press Association, is for middle and high school students interested in working on their school newspapers, yearbooks or broadcast media or in pursuing a career in journalism.

LSUS Center expands hours for ‘Farm Women’ exhibit

“Voices of American Farm Women,” an exhibit documenting the historic role of women in American agriculture, is continuing its run at the Pioneer Heritage Center on the LSUS campus. In response to higher-than-expected demand, the Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 Noon Tuesdays through Saturdays until June 20. The exhibit may be seen at other times by appointment only.

The LSUS Pilots will play the University of Mobile Rams at 12 Noon today at Pilots Field in the semi-final round of the NAIA Region XIII Baseball Tournaemnt. This game time is contrary to what was in today’s edition of The Times, which published the best information available at press time. Today’s game times rested on the outcome of Thursday’s late game between Lee University and Auburn University-Montgomery. That game ended early this morning (after 1 a.m.) with Lee winning 6-3.

LSUS Center to host ‘Voices of American Farm Women’

“Voices of American Farm Women,” an exhibit documenting the historic role of women in American agriculture, will open on Sunday (May 15) at the Pioneer Heritage Center on the LSUS campus. Featured speaker for the 2 p.m. opening is Dr. Thomas DuBose, an LSUS associate professor of English, who will draw upon his expertise in storytelling and folklore to both entertain and educate the audience about women’s influence on the cultural traditions of the regional agricultural community. Members of the audience will be invited to share their stories and experiences of growing up on a farm.

The LSUS Pilots will host the NAIA Region XIII Baseball Tournament that begins Tuesday (May 10) and are the No. 2 seed in the eight-team tournament.

Three of the eight tournament teams, including LSUS, are members of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, and the other five teams are members of the Southern States Athletic Conference.

Two LSUS debaters win national championships

Two members of the LSUS Debate Team won national championships in 2004-05 International Public Debate Association Open and Novice competition, and the Debate Team finished the season as runner-up to national champion University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. The LSUS squad retained it No. 1 state ranking.

LSUS acquires Menasco Studios Photograph Collection

The LSUS Archives and Special Collections has acquired the Menasco Studios Photograph Collection, according to Dr. Laura McLemore, curator and archivist at the LSUS Noel Memorial Library. The collection consists of thousands of negatives and photographic prints representing the life’s work of Robert Menasco, who was a prominent local portrait photographer.

LSUS to host economic development forum Thursday

LSUS will host the first of two Luncheon Forums for Economic Development Thursday (April 28) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Caddo/Bossier Room of the University Center on the LSUS campus. The forum is underwritten by the Northwest Louisiana Partnership for Innovation (NLPI), a new CERT-led initiative funded by the National Science Foundation.

Bond to deliver LSUS commencement address May 18

LSUS Lincoln Center awards Williamsburg fellowships

Three Caddo Parish middle schools have been awarded the equivalent of $3,000 fellowships each from the LSUS International Lincoln Center for American Studies to attend the Summer Teacher Institute at Colonial Williamsburg July 6-13. The program is made possible by a grant from the Community Foundation of Shreveport-Bossier.

Poetry books dating to 1669 on display at LSUS

Poetry books dating back to a translation of Homer’s “Odyssey” printed in 1669 are on display until May 21 on the third floor of the Noel Memorial Library on the LSUS campus. The exhibit is presented by the James Smith Noel Collection, which is housed in the Library.

LSUS inducts 22 into business honor society

Only a select few are called “The Best in Business,” and 22 LSUS College of Business Administration students earned the title this year. Four graduate student, 10 seniors and eight juniors have been inducted into the LSUS chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society serving business programs accredited by AACSB (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) International.

Pilots’ Fredericko Payne named First Team All-America

LSUS Pilots guard Fredericko Payne, a 5-10 junior from Dubach, has been named an NAIA First Team All-America. The leading scorer in the nation averaging 25 points a game and third in the nation in steals with 3 per game, “Rico” led the Pilots to a 27-9 record and a first-ever trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament, where they lost to the eventual national champion, John Brown University, in the Sweet Sixteen.

LSUS to host Bar’s “American Jury” panel discussion

A panel of lawyers and judges will discuss “The American Jury” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, in the LSUS Science Lecture Auditorium. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Dr. Kyle Pierce, an LSUS associate professor of kinesiology and health science and director of the USA Weightlifting Development Center at LSUS, has been named one of three finalists for the United States Olympic Committee’s “Doc” Counsilman Science Award. The USOC also announced the finalists for its National, Developmental and Volunteer Coach of the Year honors to be presented May 1 at the USOC Coach of the Year Recognition Banquet at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The LSUS College of Education and Human Development has issued the list of winners in the 2005 Region I Social Studies Fair held March 10 in the University Center on the LSUS campus. Fair co-chairs Drs. Keitha Rogers and Debbie Williams, both assistant professors of education, said the regional fair is the intermediate round of competition between the individual school level and the statewide contest.

The LSUS Communications Department will hold open auditions from 6-8 p.m. March 28-30 in the University Center Theater for its stage production of “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,” a comedy by Alan Ball, creator of “Six Feet Under” and author of “American Beauty.” The play will be directed by Mary G. “Jorji” Jarzabek, an LSUS communications instructor, who said the auditions are to cast four female roles and one male role.

LSUS professor receives Fulbright Grant for Russian work

Ron Sereg, an LSUS assistant professor of public relations, has received a 2005 Fulbright Grant that will take him to the far reaches of Northeastern Russia this spring. The internationally recognized authority on Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) development and sustainability will travel to the Central Siberian city of Barnaul where he will assist a Russian university in developing its academic program in mass communication and public relations.

LSUS honored 42 Northwest Louisiana students Thursday at the university’s 18th Annual Outstanding High School Senior banquet. LSUS has arranged for a nationally renowned author and educator to deliver two Black History Month addresses on Sunday, Feb. 6. Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will speak at Little Union Baptist Church (1846 Milam St.) at 11 a.m. and in the University Center Theater on the LSUS campus at 3 p.m. Both presentations are free and open to the public.

LSUS Authors in April program

Mark Salzman, author and cellist, will headline the annual Authors in April program benefiting the LSUS Pioneer Heritage Center. Salzman, the author of the novels The Laughing Sutra, and The Soloist, which was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for fiction, will speak at the Authors in April luncheon at Shreveport Country Club Saturday, April 9.
