LSUS graduates 299 at summer/fall commencement

LSUS graduated a total of 299 students with graduate and undergraduate degrees at its summer/fall 2004 commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier City.

LSUS congratulates 277 for Chancellor’s List honors

LSUS Chancellor Vincent J. Marsala has congratulated 277 full-time students for earning Chancellor’s List honors in the fall 2004 semester. The students, studying in the university’s four academic colleges, were recognized for earning grade-point averages of at least 3.8 on a 4.0 system. Of the total, 80 are in the College of Liberal Arts, 69 each in the College of Sciences and the College of Education and Human Development, and 59 in the College of Business Administration. The 277 students are listed here by college and hometown.

LSU System official to address LSUS commencement

Dr. Robert H. Rasmussen, the LSU System’s assistant vice president for system relations, will deliver the commencement address Wednesday (Dec. 15) at LSUS graduation ceremonies. About 300 LSUS students are expected to be graduated by the university at the summer/fall commencement exercises beginning at 7 p.m. at the CenturyTel Center.

Natchitoches native holds LSUS professorship

(SPECIAL TO THE NATCHITOCHES TIMES) Dr. Judith Covington, daughter of Thomas and Glenda Covington of Natchitoches, has been named professor designate of the LSUS Elmer & Barbara Simon Professorship for Excellence in Teaching. A 1982 graduate of Natchitoches Central High School, Covington is an associate professor of mathematics at LSUS, Louisiana’s state university in Shreveport.

LSUS to host American Open weightlifting meet

The LSUS USA Weightlifting Development Center will host the USA Weightlifting American Open championships Friday-Sunday, Dec. 3-5. The competition, to be held in the University Center Theater on the LSUS campus, is free and open to the public. Event times will be posted on the Center’s Web site – www.lsus.edu/weightlifting/ – beginning Thursday, Dec. 2.

LSUS receives teacher education re-accreditation

Studies have repeatedly shown that teacher quality is the most important factor in PreK–12 student achievement. Professional accreditation is one way to ensure that schools of education are graduating well-qualified teachers who are ready for today’s classrooms.

LSUS to offer non-resident tuition exemptions
11/15/04

LSUS will begin offering non-resident tuition exemptions to undergraduate and graduate students in the Fall 2005 semester. The move was approved recently by the LSU System Board of Supervisors help to make the university more competitive for out-of-state students who wish to attend LSUS.

A native of Monroe, Dr. Vincent J. Marsala received his M.A. in government in 1962 and Ph.D. in Latin American studies from LSU A&M in 1967. He taught political science at the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1962-1963 and joined LSUS in 1967 as an assistant professor of history. He has held the following positions at LSUS....

LSUS has two endowed chairs, 14 professorships

LSUS now has fully endowed two chairs, two super professorships and 12 professorships. The university also has one privately endowed chair waiting for the state’s match and four partially funded professorships, including the LSUS Alumni Association Vincent J. Marsala Professor ship announced today. Total contributions received from donors and the Board of Regents for the fully endowed LSUS chairs and professorships is $3.6 million.

Chairs, professorships help create economic ties

A major purpose of the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Endowed Chairs for Eminent Scholars and Endowed Professorships programs is to create stronger economic development ties between the private sector and higher education. To create endowed chairs and professorships, colleges and universities must raise 60 percent of the cost from private sources. Including the matching funds from the state, professorships are endowed at $100,000, super professorships at $200,000 and chairs at $1 million. There are also $2 million super chairs.

Nov. 16 crime-prevention seminar for businesses

The LSUS Police Department will host a Shreveport Police Department seminar on crime prevention for area businesses from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Caddo-Bossier Room of the University Center. Plant society to hear about bats, their abodes

Bats and their abodes will be the topic Thursday (Oct. 28) at the pre-Halloween meeting of the Louisiana Native Plant Society. The meeting is at 7 p.m. in the LSUS Science Lecture Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.

Eighth Annual LSUS Pioneer Day lineup finalized

The list of demonstrations for the 8th Annual Pioneer Day on Saturday, Oct. 30, has been finalized by the LSUS Pioneer Heritage Center. The event will be held on the LSUS campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 6-12. There is no charge for children 5 and under.

LSUS students to stage
mock presidential election Oct. 26

Students at LSUS will step to the polls Tuesday (Oct. 26) in a mock election to determine who they would prefer to occupy the White House for the next four years. LSUS faculty will also be eligible to vote.

The Shreveport Journalism Foundation is seeking applicants for the two $1,000 scholarships it gives annually in memory of the late veteran journalists Orland Dodson and Kerry Garland. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, Oct. 15.

LSUS to host free classical music concert Tuesday
10/01/04

LSUS will host a classical music concert at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 5) in the Science Lecture Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. Sponsored by the Piatigorsky Foundation, the concert will feature soprano Erika Wueschner and pianist Spencer Myer. Both artists are graduates of The Juilliard School and are touring North Louisiana from Sept. 29 to Oct. 8.

More than 55 employers expected at LSUS Career Fair

The LSUS Career Center will hold its annual Career Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. Dr. Brian Hirsch, director of the Career Center, invites all Northwest Louisiana employers to participate and expects more than last year’s 55 employers to be in the LSUS University Center for this year’s fair.

Joseph Savoie, Louisiana commissioner of higher education, presented three checks today totaling $120,000 representing the state Board of Regents’ matching funds for three endowed professorships in the LSUS College of Business Administration. The checks were presented in a news conference at the LSU Health Sciences Center.

Regents to present matching funds

On Tuesday, Aug. 31, Dr. E. Joseph Savoie, commissioner of higher education, and members of the Board of Regents will conduct a news conference at the LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport to present LSUS with checks representing matching funds for three endowed professorships – the BellSouth Corporation Professorship in Business Administration, the Joe and Abby Averett Professorship in Business and the Bank One Jerry D. Boughton Professorship in Business. The news conference will be held at 3 p.m. in Conference Center Room 221.

LSUS names Jed Jones women’s soccer coach

LSUS has named former Centenary College coach Jed Jones as its head women’s soccer coach. Jones was the head men’s and women’s soccer coach at Centenary from 1997 to 2004, compiling a 77-45-7 record with the Ladies. At the end of the 2003 season, Jones’ career winning percentage ranked him 44th in NCAA Division I.

LSUS names Butterbaugh dean of students

LSUS has named Dr. Randy R. Butterbaugh as its first dean of students. Raised in Ohio, he comes to Shreveport from Augusta, Ga., where he retired as director of student affairs at the Medical College of Georgia after 28 years in higher education. In that time, he was a marketing instructor at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.; an adjunct instructor of marketing at Saint Francis College, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; residence hall director at Mississippi State University; director of residence life at Berry College, Mount Berry, Ga., and other assignments in the Division of Student Affairs at the Medical College of Georgia.

Middle school students complete LSUS LaPREP

A group of middle school students from Caddo, Bossier and DeSoto parishes are better prepared to complete a college degree in math, science or engineering because of their participation in the 13th Annual Louisiana Preparatory Program at LSUS. The 48 students were honored July 23 at an awards ceremony for which Ron Anderson, executive director of the Highland Center, was the featured speaker.

The New Event Advisory I sent yesterday implied the LSUS Bat Cave site is accessible from the C. Bickham Dickson Park main entrance on Bert Kouns. That's not true. The cave is being constructed on LSUS property adjacent to Bickham Dickson Park just across the levee from E. Kings Highway. The site is accessible from a gravel service road just south of Aulds Funeral Home. Orange traffic cones are positioned along Kings Highway at the service road.

LSUS names Gustavson education dean
05/28/04

Dr. David Gustavson, an LSUS professor of education, has been named dean of the university’s College of Education and Human Development. Gustavson has served in a number of positions at LSUS over the past 30 years, most recently as chair of the Department of Education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in English education, social studies and psychology in 1967 and a Master of Arts degree in secondary education in 1972, both from Murray State University in Kentucky. He received Doctor of Education degree from Indiana University in 1974.

LSUS names Erwin interim vice chancellor

LSUS has named Glenda Erwin interim vice chancellor for university development. She had been associate vice chancellor for university development. Erwin earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from LSU A&M and a Master of Arts in liberal arts from LSUS. Prior to joining the LSUS staff in 1998, she worked for the state Department of Education, the Orleans Parish School Board, the Bossier Parish School Board and as an adjunct instructor in public relations at LSUS.

Melissa T. Mainiero has been named director of institutional effectiveness at LSUS. She joined the LSUS staff in spring 2003 as coordinator of assessment and accountability in the College of Education and Human Development. She will continue to assist the College of Education and Human Development with assessment and continuing accreditation efforts, and will continue to teach Secondary Classroom Management and Secondary Math/Science Materials & Methods.

LSUS freshman sets junior national weightlifting records

LSUS freshman Derrick Johnson, of St. Louis, set all three junior national weightlifting records in the 62 kg category last weekend at Indiana University and won the Collegiate National Weightlifting Championships. Johnson set both the collegiate and national junior records in the snatch (112.5 kg), clean & jerk (138 kg) and total (250). In setting those records, he broke his own national junior records in the snatch and total. He also won the Age 23 & Under Division.

Mike Tidwell, four-time Lowell Thomas Award winner, will be the featured author at the 13th annual Authors in April at noon on Saturday, April 3, at Shreveport Country Club. In his latest book, Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Coastal Louisiana, Tidwell details one of the most disturbing, yet fascinating phenomena in America – the vanishing marshlands of the Louisiana coast and the impact of that loss on the Cajun culture of the bayou folk who live and work in the fishing communities dotting the 6,000 square miles of coastal wetlands.

LSUS Pilots crush Crusaders; finish fourth in conference

The LSUS Pilots crushed the William Carey College Crusaders, 98-81, Saturday night in Hattiesburg, Miss., to finish their inaugural Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular basketball season tied for fourth place in the conference. The Pilots (20-11, 12-6 GCAC) were deadlocked in the final conference standings with Dillard University (N.O.), only one game back of the three-way first place tie among the University of Mobile, Xavier University (N.O.) and Southern University-New Orleans, all with 13-5 conference records.

An AEP/SWEPCO grant is funding a new broadcast lab in the LSUS Communications Department. The grant – totaling $40,000 over three years – and the equipment to be purchased with it will be discussed at 10:15 a.m. Friday, (Feb. 27), when two LSUS broadcast journalism students will “interview” AEP/SWEPCO Arkansas/Louisiana President Brian Bond on a “set” in the classroom that will house the TV studio. ‘News feature interview’ to announce new LSUS TV lab

An AEP/SWEPCO grant is funding a new broadcast lab in the LSUS Communications Department. The grant – totaling $40,000 over three years – and the equipment to be purchased with it will be discussed at 10:15 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, when two LSUS broadcast journalism students will “interview” AEP/SWEPCO head Brian Bond on a “set” in the classroom that will house the TV studio. This unusual news conference will be in Room 363 in Bronson Hall on the LSUS campus.

LSUS program to address ‘hate on campus’

“Ten Things You Can Do to Prevent Hate on Campus” will be discussed at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 18) in the LSUS University Center Theater. The program will be presented by Tafeni English of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is conducting the program on a number of college campuses.

The LSUS Lady Pilots hosted NAIA 13th-ranked Xavier University tonight but were unable to mine the Gold Nuggets, dropping the contest, 59-40. The Lady Pilots were coming off their biggest win of season, a Saturday victory over Southern University of New Orleans.

The LSUS Lady Pilots played host Southern University of New Orleans Knights Saturday at LSUS Gymnasium. Head coach Ronnie Howell was looking for his first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) win of the year, and was pleased with the results from the first half.

Stafford finishes with 21 points in 65-51 loss to Loyola

The LSUS Lady Pilots traveled to New Orleans Saturday to face their conference rival Loyola Wolfpack. Loyola proved to be too much for LSUS right out of the gates as they started the game by building a 14 point lead in the first five minutes. The Lady Pilots managed to cut the Wolfpack lead which grew to as many as 24 in the second half to 8 points, but could not ever recover from the early deficit.

The LSUS Pilots faced off against the Loyola Wolfpack of New Orleans Saturday afternoon looking to improve their Gulf Coast Athletic Conference record to 3-1 on the year. At the conclusion of the first half, the Pilots had dominated the game and had a 36-17 lead.
