Chancellor Vincent J. Marsala has congratulated 277 full-time students
for earning Chancellor’s List honors in the fall 2004 semester.
The students,
studying in the university’s four academic colleges, were
recognized for earning grade-point averages of at least 3.8 on a
4.0 system. Of the total, 80 are in the College of Liberal Arts,
69 each in the College of Sciences and the College of Education
and Human Development, and 59 in the College of Business Administration.

Robert H. Rasmussen, the LSU System’s assistant vice president
for system relations, will deliver the commencement address Wednesday
(Dec. 15) at LSUS graduation ceremonies. About 300 LSUS students
are expected to be graduated by the university at the summer/fall
commencement exercises beginning at 7 p.m. at the CenturyTel Center.

Natchitoches, has been named professor designate of the LSUS Elmer
& Barbara Simon Professorship for Excellence in Teaching. A
1982 graduate of Natchitoches Central High School, Covington is
an associate professor of mathematics at LSUS, Louisiana’s
state university in Shreveport.

to offer non-resident tuition exemptions

will begin offering non-resident tuition exemptions to undergraduate
and graduate students in the Fall 2005 semester. The move was approved
recently by the LSU System Board of Supervisors help to make the
university more competitive for out-of-state students who wish to
attend LSUS.

native of Monroe, Dr. Vincent J. Marsala received his M.A. in government
in 1962 and Ph.D. in Latin American studies from LSU A&M in
1967. He taught political science at the University of Southwestern
Louisiana in 1962-1963 and joined LSUS in 1967 as an assistant professor
of history. He has held the following positions at LSUS....

has fully endowed two chairs, two super professorships and 12 professorships.
The university also has one privately endowed chair waiting for
the state’s match and four partially funded professorships,
including the LSUS Alumni Association Vincent J. Marsala Professor
ship announced today. Total contributions received from donors and
the Board of Regents for the fully endowed LSUS chairs and professorships
is $3.6 million.

A
major purpose of the Louisiana Board of Regents’ Endowed Chairs
for Eminent Scholars and Endowed Professorships programs is to create
stronger economic development ties between the private sector and
higher education. To create endowed chairs and professorships, colleges
and universities must raise 60 percent of the cost from private
sources. Including the matching funds from the state, professorships
are endowed at $100,000, super professorships at $200,000 and chairs
at $1 million. There are also $2 million super chairs.

list of demonstrations for the 8th Annual Pioneer Day on Saturday,
Oct. 30, has been finalized by the LSUS Pioneer Heritage Center.
The event will be held on the LSUS campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for children 6-12. There is no

has named former Centenary College coach Jed Jones as its head women’s
soccer coach. Jones was the head men’s and women’s soccer
coach at Centenary from 1997 to 2004, compiling a 77-45-7 record
with the Ladies. At the end of the 2003 season, Jones’ career
winning percentage ranked him 44th in NCAA Division I.

has named Dr. Randy R. Butterbaugh as its first dean of students.
Raised in Ohio, he comes to Shreveport from Augusta, Ga., where
he retired as director of student affairs at the Medical College
of Georgia after 28 years in higher education. In that time, he
was a marketing instructor at Ball State University, Muncie, Ind.;
an adjunct instructor of marketing at Saint Francis College, Ft.
Wayne, Ind.; residence hall director at Mississippi State University;
director of residence life at Berry College, Mount Berry, Ga., and
other assignments in the Division of Student Affairs at the Medical
College of Georgia.

are better prepared to complete a college degree in math, science
or engineering because of their participation in the 13th Annual
Louisiana Preparatory Program at LSUS. The 48 students were honored
July 23 at an awards ceremony for which Ron Anderson, executive

David Gustavson, an LSUS professor of education, has been named
dean of the university’s College of Education and Human Development.
Gustavson has served in a number of positions at LSUS over the past
30 years, most recently as chair of the Department of Education.

a Bachelor of Science degree in English education, social studies
and psychology in 1967 and a Master of Arts degree in secondary
education in 1972, both from Murray State University in Kentucky.
He received Doctor of Education degree from Indiana University in

She had been associate vice chancellor for university development.
Erwin earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from

of Education, the Orleans Parish School Board, the Bossier Parish

freshman Derrick Johnson, of St. Louis, set all three junior national
weightlifting records in the 62 kg category last weekend at Indiana
University and won the Collegiate National Weightlifting Championships.
Johnson set both the collegiate and national junior records in the
snatch (112.5 kg), clean & jerk (138 kg) and total (250). In
setting those records, he broke his own national junior records
in the snatch and total. He also won the Age 23 & Under Division.

LSUS Pilots crushed the William Carey College Crusaders, 98-81,
Saturday night in Hattiesburg, Miss., to finish their inaugural
Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular basketball season tied for
fourth place in the conference. The Pilots (20-11, 12-6 GCAC) were
deadlocked in the final conference standings with Dillard University
(N.O.), only one game back of the three-way first place tie among
the University of Mobile, Xavier University (N.O.) and Southern
University-New Orleans, all with 13-5 conference records.

– and the equipment to be purchased with it will be discussed
at 10:15 a.m. Friday, (Feb. 27), when two LSUS broadcast journalism

President Brian Bond on a “set” in the classroom that

The LSUS Lady Pilots traveled to New Orleans Saturday to face their
conference rival Loyola Wolfpack. Loyola proved to be too much for
LSUS right out of the gates as they started the game by building
a 14 point lead in the first five minutes. The Lady Pilots managed
to cut the Wolfpack lead which grew to as many as 24 in the second
half to 8 points, but could not ever recover from the early deficit.
