Tribute Garden Dedicated at LSU Shreveport
August 24, 2011A tribute garden dedicated to retired LSUS faculty and staff donated by alumna Joanne U. Hummer was dedicated today during a ceremony in the Noel Memorial Library. Hummer received her Bachelor of Arts in education in 1979 and her Master of Education in 1981, both from LSUS.
Hummer and two of her three children, Kathy Rednick and William "Billy" Hummer, were in attendance. Hummer spoke of her fond time at LSUS and her gratitude for the faculty and staff. "I could think of no better way to thank them," she said.
Donna Curtis, executive director of Shreveport Green who donated labor and maintenance of the garden, was also present and spoke of her appreciation for the Hummer family and the University. Curtis said, "These are exactly the projects Shreveport Green likes to participate in and we are grateful to be a part."
Ground broke in May 2011 after more than a year of planning with the Hummer family and Donald Bounds of Berkenbile Landscape Architect, Inc. Within one month the garden was completed with more than 25 variations of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and herbs donated from the Hummer family-owned company Monrovia Nursery located in Azusa, Cali.
Other organizations who participated in the construction of the garden include: LSUS Facility Services, Matthews Landscape, Sullivan's Irrigation, Bob Davis Electric Company, John R. Bowman and Associates, FitzGerald Contractors and Camus Electric.
