September 01, 2011
The LSUS Department of Communications is pleased to announce the fall 2011, Scholars in Communication winners. Scholars are selected by the faculty from among those mass communication and speech majors who have a record of outstanding academic achievement and professional accomplishment.
Rachel Taylor, a senior studying journalism from Keatchie, La., is interning at the "Shreveport Times." She is a member of the national communication honor society Lambda Pi Eta, which she serves as treasurer of the Psi Kappa Chapter.
"Being a part of Lambda Pi Eta has meant a lot to me personally. Having the opportunity to be involved with this honor society has been one of my biggest motivations in maintaining my good grades," said Taylor. "As a student writer for the "Almagest," I have developed skills one could not cultivate while sitting in a classroom allowing me to get a first-hand look of what is expected of a journalist."
Alex Anderson, a senior concentrating in electronic media journalism from Haughton, La., is interning at KSLA.
"The thing I enjoy most about mass communications is being able to be involved in the production of the LSUS Student News," said Anderson.
Mary Spring, a senior focusing on theatre from Springhill, La., has appeared in several Black Box productions at LSUS and is a member Lambda Pi Eta.
"I have always worked very hard to keep up my GPA, but after transferring to LSUS, and realizing what I really wanted to study, being a good student became much more satisfying, for me," explained Spring. "I enjoy learning, and have had some wonderful professors to help me stay focused.
James Tiner is a senior concentrating on the field of public relations.
The scholarship is funded by royalties from the sale of the public speaking textbook, "Introduction to Public Speaking." Scholars are named each semester after application and selection processes have been completed.
