MLA Student at LSUS Earns Scholarship to Oxford

April 03, 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Each year, the English Speaking Union of New Orleans offers secondary-school teachers throughout Louisiana the opportunity to compete for a scholarship to study at Oxford, London, or Edinburgh. The Master of Arts in Liberal Arts program at LSUS has announced that this year’s scholarship recipients include Jennie Wright, MLA student and English IV and AP teacher at Parkway High School in Bossier City. Ms. Wright graduated from LSUS with a B.A. in English-Education in 2000 and taught middle school for some years before moving to Parkway. She chose to continue her studies in the MLA Program because, she explains, “it enables me to take classes that will directly benefit my students.”

This July, Ms. Wright will enter Exeter College, Oxford as a summer-school student, living on campus and taking classes on Jane Austen and on the English Romantic Poets. Not only will she be immersed in classroom learning, she’ll also be surrounded by history – Exeter is one of the oldest Colleges at Oxford, with buildings dating to the 15th century. Its graduates include Samuel Wesley, Philip Pullman and J. R. R. Tolkien. She will visit London and Bath before arriving in Oxford.

The ESU Travel and Learn Abroad scholarship offers her the “opportunity of a lifetime.”

“I am way beyond excited,” she says.

And afterwards, her LSUS professors note, she’ll bring that excitement and those experiences back to the classroom at Parkway and into her ongoing studies in the LSUS MLA Program.
