Mayor Names Friday "LSUS Debate Team Day!"

November 05, 2014

Mayor Cedric Glover issued a proclamation making Friday, November 7th, 2014 "LSU Shreveport Debate Team Day" in honor of the team's longevity and success.
In the proclamation, Mayor Glover cites the 40th anniversary of the LSU Shreveport Debate Team's Red River Classic Tournament, which attracts some of the nation's best competitors, and the history of national championship titles the team has won over the years.

This honor is the result of the hard work and recognition of the mayor's office and the Shreveport/Bossier Tourism Bureau.  Debate Team President Madelyn Snead stated, "On behalf of the team and LSU Shreveport, we are deeply appreciative and humbled by this honor and would like to thank Mayor Glover and all of those at the Tourism Bureau who have supported us over the years."  Snead went on to say, "It is equally important, we would like to thank all of the faculty, staff, students, administrators and debate team alums who came before us that made an honor like this possible."

proclomation

The LSU Shreveport Debate Team was established in 1970 with Dr. Frank Lower as the first coach. At that time the team was a student club sponsored by the Communications Department. The primary reasoning behind the inception of the first debate team was the education of the students. While the people have changed, over the last 44 years the goal of the LSUS Debate Team has remained firm; to nurture and develop the overall communication skills of our students. In the past seven years the team has earned nearly three dozen national championship titles. This coming March, members of the team have been invited to join the United States squad as it competes against Great Britain in the Montgomery Cup.
