LSUS Team Attends 5th Annual Louisiana Conference on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
April 18, 2017
On April 7-8, 2017 a team from LSUS attended and presented at the 5th Annual LA Conference on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics hosted by Xavier University in New Orleans. Phillip Kilgore, Dr. Urska Cvek, and Dr. Marjan Trutschl represented the Laboratory for Advanced Biomedical Informatics and Department of Computer Science. They were joined by Natalie Burford, Master of Science in Biological Sciences student.
Phillip Kilgore gave an oral presentation discussing Circos plots “Circos Plots: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” The topic was very timely as Circos plots were presented by majority of the speakers in the two days. Phillip discussed the theory behind these diagrams, the problems of imperceptibility arising from information overload, improper use of color, and improper metaphor, as well as the arrangement of the diagram to convey meaningful information. Dr. Urska Cvek presented a poster on NEBULA Biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), coauthored by LABi and Dr. J. Steven Alexander and Ms. Winny Yun of LSU Health Sciences Shreveport. The poster focused on the inflammatory release of apical and basolateral microparticles bearing lymphatic markers which underlie glymphatic venous disturbances seen in MS.
