LSUS STUDENT CHELSEA ANTHONY WILL WIN SEASON NATIONAL DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE
March 14, 2013
LSU Shreveport’s Chelsea Anthony will receive the International Public Debate Association’s “Edmund Burke Award” for winning the Season Ranking National Champion title in the organization’s varsity division. The title will be conferred during the awards banquet at the IPDA National Championship Tournament on March 24th.
Though there are tournaments left unaccounted for in the season standings, Anthony, a senior Psychology major, so out-distanced her competition that the title can be confirmed. Other LSU Shreveport debaters ranked high in their respective divisions but are waiting to see where they finish in the national standings.
Anthony earned 74 total points for the season eclipsing second place by 13 points. Each debater counts their top six tournaments and earns one point for every preliminary win, one point for making it to elimination rounds at a given tournament and then two points for each elimination round win. Throughout the season Anthony reached the finals four times and won three of those. In her total 10 tournaments of the season she only failed to reach the semifinals of a tournament twice.
The title of Varsity Season Champion also comes with an additional honor. Anthony’s success earns her a voting seat on the organization’s governing board for the 2013-2014 season.
Next up, Anthony will take her title and lead the LSU Shreveport debate team into the IPDA National Championship Tournament beginning on March 21st. This is the second national championship title for Anthony. In 2012 she and partner Kyle Bickham won the Team title at the national championship tournament.
