LSUS Names Al Cantwell Head Baseball Coach
August 28, 2013
The LSU Shreveport Athletics Council and Athletic Director Chad McDowell are pleased to announce that Mr. Allan Cantwell has been selected to succeed Mr. Rocke Musgraves as Head Baseball Coach, effective immediately. Coach Musgraves recently accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.
Coach Cantwell is no stranger to LSUS, having played and coached here while earning two LSUS degrees. As a student athlete at LSUS, Cantwell played baseball from 2000 to 2002, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science in 2003. While playing for LSUS, Cantwell was recognized as an All-Conference player by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Following his playing career, he was employed at LSUS as the Sports Information Director while serving as an assistant coach from 2003 to 2007. During that time, he completed work in 2005 for a Master of Education degree with an emphasis upon Exercise Science. In 2010, he received a Master of Arts in Teaching degree with an emphasis in Health Education from Louisiana Tech University.
In 2007, Cantwell was hired as Head Baseball Coach and physical education teacher by C. E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, a position he has held since that time. During his tenure at Byrd, Cantwell recorded the second highest number of wins in school history, amassing a record of 135 wins and 81 losses for a winning percentage of .625. Under his leadership, Byrd reached the State Semifinals in 2009 and the State Quarterfinals in 2011 and 2012. His 2012 squad was the first undefeated (15-0) District Champion in the history of Byrd baseball. He was honored as Shreveport Times Coach of the Year in 2010 and as District Coach of the Year in 2012. Additionally, Cantwell served as Head Coach for the Kelowna Falcons in the West Coast League in 2011 and 2012, recruiting and coaching college players from across the United States and Canada in Collegiate Summer Baseball, taking them to the first winning seasons in franchise history.
Putting together five consecutive 20+ win seasons, Cantwell saw nineteen of his Yellow Jackets go on to play collegiate baseball while two of them—Peter Pizarro in 2012 and Chris Cotton in 2013—were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.
Coach Cantwell takes over a very successful program which has won numerous conference regular season and tournament titles, as well as progressing frequently to the NAIA National Tournament. The Pilots have advanced to compete in three NAIA College World Series. Cantwell was on the Pilots coaching staff the first appearance in 2003.
All faculty, staff, and Pilot fans are welcome to join the baseball team and entire athletic department in welcoming Coach Cantwell to LSUS. The meet and greet with Coach Cantwell will take place at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 28, 2013, in the H&PE Building (Gymnasium known as “The Dock”). Athletic Director Chad McDowell plans on saying a few words about our new coach and then Coach Cantwell will address the crowd.
